Visual Arts Prep - Year 6

with Ms Nardo, Ms Mancini P-3 & Ms. Nishani 4-6

Prep Visual Art

During the last couple of weeks students in Prep have been consolidating their visual art knowledge alongside their mathematical and literacy understanding.  Students have been thinkers when they managed to convert lines into interesting patterns to create paper inspired by Eric Carle.  They then used the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar to think about how an author and illustrator goes through an inquiry cycle to create their books.  They reflected on the method used by Carle to cut and create their own hungry caterpillar from their coloured paper.    They followed on from this by using their mathematical vocabulary to create a colour patterned caterpillar by printing using aryclic paint and circular sponges.  Students created a setting for their caterpillar consolidating their literacy knowledge about story telling.

Year 1 and 2

Throughout the last couple of weeks the Year 1 and 2 students have been scaffolding their knowledge of watercolour techniques to communicate a message to their audience.  They were open-minded in viewing the book Flood by Jackie French and illustrated by Bruce Whatley and learning how the illustrator managed to provoke the audience into thinking about the choices of colour and texture.  Students were risk takers in attempting to recreate the cover of the book using watercolour techniques inspired by the illustrator.  For their image, students moved from using the wet-on-wet technique to create their background wash and then continued to add details to their work.  They were thinkers when choosing between different size brushes and values to create texture in their image.  They finished off their creative cycle by adding a few lines into their work.

Year 3

These last couple of weeks the Year 3 students have been finishing off their mini-beasts and animals inspired by the books by Lance Balchin: Mechanica, Aquatica and Jurassica.  Balchin's books are set in a dystopian future where scientists have had to create animals and insects to replace those lost through human environmental impact.  Students have been linking this unit to their current class Unit of Inquiry and have managed to use their knowledge from class within the Visual Art studio.  Students have proceeded through the creative cycle in fashioning their own creature from the future inspired by Balchin's stories and influenced by the Steampunk movement. Students will finish these creatures off by creating a narrative that discusses the origins and features of their creations.

Year 4

Congratulations to all the students this year on a fantastic year of creativity and hard work in the Senior Visual Arts Room.

Year 4's have completed their Sidney Nolan inspired Art project on the Ned Kelly series. It was wonderful to see the students progress in their drawing skills during this project as they consolidated their ideas and skills in designing and drawing horses, wanted posters, typography font, Australian landscapes and various images of Ned Kelly.

The final project showcased the students summative skills in drawing and understanding and demonstrating perspective and space as they created focal points, foregrounds and backgrounds.

Year Five

Students in Year 5 have recently completed their Graffiti projects where they have investigated the history and origins of graffiti  and how graffiti is used to express messages and opinions. They have demonstrated their summative skills in drawing various graffiti techniques, fonts and typography to create their final art project.   Congratulations to all these fantastic artists who have been selected to showcase their work today!

Year 6

Students in year 6 have completed their Starry Night art projects inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.  The work below showcases their oil pastel skills and techniques demonstrating layering of colours, scraffito, scumbling and use of hard and soft pressure to create an impasto effect in their work. These techniques and use of oil pastels as the medium demonstrates the Impressionist and Post Impressionist style strokes which are highlighted below:
