Student Wellbeing

Attendance Matters

Education is important and regular attendance at school is essential for a child to build on what they learnt the day before. Positive school attendance helps students to:

  • Develop a sense of belonging.
  • Build and maintain strong friendships.
  • Become fully engaged with their learning at school.
  • Progress with their learning.
  • Become aware of their own interests to open doors for career and life options.

Every Day Counts

How can Parents and Caregivers Support Positive School Attendance?

Parents and Caregivers have a legal responsibility to send their child to school and ensure their attendance rate is high. It is important Parents and Caregivers make every effort to promote their child’s attendance to ensure they maximise their learning and build strong relationship with peers and teachers. Ways you can help to promote high and consistent school attendance include:

  • Discuss with your child the importance of punctuality, consistent routines and encourage them to be organised.
  • Ensure your child arrives on time and ready to learn.
  • Regularly work with your child’s teacher and other school representatives to encourage and support school attendance.

How can Student’s help their own Positive School Attendance?

  • Know your timetable and have all resources ready, i.e., correct workbook, printing,
  • Make sure you are ready for your school day the night before: uniform out, bag packed with books etc, laptops/iPads charged.
  • Ask your teacher for help if schoolwork is becoming challenging or overwhelming.
  • Chat with family or friends if you have concerns about attending school or if you identify a barrier in getting to school.

The Importance of Arriving on Time

Student learning is more successful when students are present consistently for the whole school day. Students who arrive “just a few minutes late” miss out on vital information on the day ahead.

Arriving at school and in class on time is important because:

  • Students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day.
  • It helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine.
  • It allows time for students to meet with their friends before class.
  • It reduces classroom disruption.
