Changing Places

Geographical skills at Barangaroo

Last month, students in Year 9 who are currently studying Geography this semester, travelled to Darling Harbour and Barangaroo as part of their ‘Changing Places’ fieldwork.

Students have been studying the topic ‘Changing Places’ which explores the patterns and trends in population movements and the increasing urbanisation of countries. On this fieldwork excursion, students were given the opportunity to participate in fieldwork that allowed them to observe and analyse urbanisation that is occurring in Sydney. We were very lucky to have a team of representatives from Lendlease talk to our students and take us on a tour that highlighted the urban development occurring in Darling Square. This was a great opportunity for our Year 9 Geographers to collect primary data and put into practice the geographical skills they have been learning in class out in the field.

A large thanks to the Social Sciences staff who attended and led the students by sharing their expertise in the field: Ms Sahid, Ms Adams and Mr Faulker and Ms Ha. A special thanks to the Year 9 Adviser (Mrs Green) and Deputy Principal (Mrs James) who also joined us for the day along and assisted students out in the field.

Year 9 were well-behaved on the day and proudly represented the school.

Mr Jacob Issa, Social Sciences Teacher

Year 9 had the opportunity to go to Barangaroo and Darling Harbour for our Geography excursion. We went to see how Sydney has been urbanised to help us with the current topic ‘Changing Places’. After catching the bus to the city, we walked around Darling Square and Barangaroo and discussed how sustainable strategies were being used to create a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable urban place. We were able to see how all the parts of Barangaroo were coming together to make a more improved and useable area for Sydney. We especially looked at employment, entertainment and environmental considerations in the area. Overall, the excursion was great and we had a really good time.
