Year 7's Brave performances

Poetry Slam

When we think of poetry, we usually don’t think about performance or battles. However, 7S and 7O did just that in a poetry slam competition at the end of term 3! A poetry slam is where poets perform spoken word poetry in front of an active audience. Students were asked to present a poem about a topic they feel strongly about such as; a worldly issue or a personal experience that can inspire others. Combining both poetry and performance is a unique way to tell stories with passion and confidence through performance.

Under the warming sun, our slammers employed rhythmic tones and hip hop beats to deliver spoken word poems about ‘the current drought’, ‘bullying in schools’ and ‘migration to Australia.’ All of these slams were delivered with incredible raw emotion and vivid imagery.

It was amazing to see and hear the support from classmates in 7R and 7J who were respectful audience members. At the end of the performances, judges Ms Wicks, Ms O’Malley, Ms Kulevski and Ms Li Donni were left with the difficult task of picking the definitive poetry champions.

Our winners were:

Lily Vella
Marfel Khdfer
Tiana Tepsa
Lily Vella
Marfel Khdfer
Tiana Tepsa

First place - Marfel Khdher

Second place - Lilly Vella

Third place - Tiana Tepsa

Students described the experience as both enlightening and entertaining. Ana Kos in 7s exclaimed “who knew poetry could be delivered on stage.” Others said “who knew reading poetry could be so much fun”!!

The poetry slam would not have been possible without our brave year 7 students. All composed their own poetic pieces and took on the challenge to perform them in front of their class mates.  A special thank you and congratulations goes out to the 20 brave performance across 7s and 70 who fearlessly took on the art of combining both poetry and performance in delivering a successful poetry slam.
