Tutoring skills help students

Final training completed

In week 10 of Term 3, Year 10 Peer Literacy tutors (PLT) completed their final training session at Miller TAFE. They also completed their TAFE enrolment and were issued with TAFE ID cards with some pretty snappy photos.  As part of their ongoing assessment, they were required to complete a reflection statement based on their experiences during roll call. This is what they had to say:

“…the program has allowed me to broaden my skills and help develop the growth of younger students…’

‘The reason I applied for this role is to assist someone while also improving my own tutoring skills…’

Throughout the year, I have helped my tutee with his assessment tasks and with NAPLAN. This has also helped me to become organized and better with the assessments that I produce’.

‘My tutee was shy and secluded but now she is talkative…’

‘We had to apply to partake in this course and we saw it as an opportunity to boost our learning and also to gain a qualification for the future’.

‘Active listening means to listen and to ask questions while someone is reading or talking. While active listening, it is important to interact with your tutee and have a non-judgmental attitude’.

‘I wanted to apply for the PLT because I wanted an experience similar to that of a teacher to gain an insight into what it is like to teach someone. I also applied because I saw it as a form of work experience… Another reason I wanted to be a peer literacy tutor is to teach younger students and help them develop their numeracy and literacy skills which in turn boosts their confidence…’

‘…PLT will develop my interactive skills within the greater world where I will be able to use the skills that I learnt…’

‘By teaching these tutees literacy skills, we are relearning it too. So it’s a win win really.’

These Year 10 students will receive their certificates and TAFE transcripts as a record of their achievement next term in a special presentation.
