Our Restaurant Rules

Year 8 creating in the kitchen

Year 8

This year, Year 8 Technology Mandatory students have completed a number of different projects using various materials and technologies available to them through school. Some of these projects include making and creating shoulder/laptop bag, breakfast tray, designing of a house and creating a restaurant.

The unit, My Restaurant Rules, encourages students to look at what is required when creating and designing a restaurant and allows them to be as creative as they like with an unlimited budget. Some of our designs have been quite extravagant and rather inventive, as well as being extremely well thought out.  I can imagine these ventures coming to fruition in the future with amazing success.

Students find the cooking extremely enjoyable and we always have great results and breakthroughs. It's wonderful to see students eating foods they may never have eaten before and changing their minds on their initial ideas of what a certain meal would taste like, based on their prior knowledge and peer comments.  Whilst in class, students shared stories of how they are beginning to cook more at home and proving to parents that they won’t burn the house down and are “pretty good young cooks.”

The dishes created by our Year 8 classes reflect entrees, main meals and desserts. Some of these include:

  1. Mini quiches
  2. Chicken and corn soup
  3. Pasta Napolitana
  4. Chicken teriyaki with boiled rice
  5. Orange pancakes with orange sauce
  6. Bombe alaska

With the exception of Bombe Alaska, students have the opportunity to take their meal home to show mum and dad but as the created meals are so delicious, most students eat it all before it reaches the school gates or playground!

Term 4 Week 6 has seen students tackling the chicken teriyaki with boiled rice. Students are keenly awaiting the pancakes (but no so much the orange sauce).  I am confident that once students taste the sweet, citrus creation next week they will change their minds.

Parents and carers, Year 8 cooking skills are bound to amaze you!

Lesson requirements - Reminder

Parents and students are reminded that two tea towels, an oven mitt, apron and container are required for all cooking practicals in order for students to successfully complete their practical lesson.
