Year 1 Spotlight

Here we go again!

The Year 1 Team would like to shout out all of our amazing, hardworking and resilient Year 1 students. Term three had a rocky start, however it didn’t take long to get back into the swing of remote learning.

Writing

In writing, students have been busy learning about the different ways people can communicate, focusing on letter writing. During the Olympics, students wrote letters of encouragement and congratulations to athletes. They have been writing letters and postcards to their family and friends. What a wonderful way to connect and keep in touch during lockdown.

In week seven, students took some time in writing to think all about Gratitude. In these uncertain times we believe it is important to remember to be grateful for all the things that bring us joy! Each day students enjoyed using a writing prompt to share their gratitude in their very own gratitude journal.

Mathematics

In maths, we have been learning about time. To begin our unit, we made creative clocks from materials that we found around our homes, such as coloured paper, sticks and paint. We have also been learning all about division and sharing into equal groups. Grace from 1D used marbles to show how 35 objects can be shared equally into 5 groups of 7.

Science

Last week was National Science Week and the theme was Food: Different by Design. Students engaged in some food-based experiments to explore the science behind the food we eat. One of these experiments was mixing bicarb soda and citric acid together to make sherbet and exploring the chemical reaction that occurs in your mouth when you eat it. The students enjoyed this experiment commenting that it feels like:

It’s like a dance party in my mouth.” ~ Siena L, 1C

They also explored how plants get water from their roots to the rest of the plant by conducting a celery experiment with food dye.
