Girls Netball

Congratulations to all girls who participated last week at the inter school netball competition. We were fortunate enough to be able to take three teams this year and had access to the beautiful facilities at HE Parker Reserve in Heathmont. Thanks Shaun Gillespie and Amy Malander for organising this venue.

The girls all played so well and were just happy to be out there and playing for the school after missing competition last year due to COVID-19.  The A team won all matches as did the B team. The C team made a good account of themselves and won a match as well. The A team now progresses onto Division and will compete in August. Some super goals were shot by the likes of Amber T, Sienna V, Mia L and Olivia G. Kate M made a return to the court after an injury had prevented her playing for some time and centre court was dominated by the likes of Erin J, Abby S and Milly R. Fine defending was exhibited by Jess T and Evie P on the day. Everyone played a part and thanks so much to all the girls. You did us proud.

A huge thanks to ex-students Annie Dyett and Chelsea Smith who returned to coach our girls once again. The girls love you both and benefit greatly from your advice.

Senior Boys Netball

Our A and B Netball Teams had a great day competing in the Waverley District Competition on Tuesday May 25. For the first time, we had to play on outside courts and with the impending storm threatening all day, strong wind gusts made shooting for goal particularly challenging.

The round robin was set up so that A and B teams all played each other; six games in total. Our B team had a great day persevering against A teams and successfully winning their two B team matches. The A team won all of their games and will progress to the Regional finals in July.

The umpires were very impressed with the boys footwork and their netball knowledge and commented positively on the way in which our teams responded to decisions. This made for both a highly successful and very enjoyable day!

B Team:

Theo F, Damian P, Christan M, Tim A, Sam K, Tom D, Elijah H, Jeremy L.

A Team:

Lachlan C, Josh S, Kieren M, Jonathon M, Riley A, Sean R, Kaleb L, Liam S, Tom W,

Boys AFL

On Friday 14th May the Intermediate Boys AFL team competed in the Division Round Robin at Mulgrave. The Year 9 and 10 boys showed great spirit, skill and teamwork across all three games and came away undefeated. Captains Oscar D and Pat C lead the team admirably and an even spread of contributors was important to winning each game. Whilst we won comfortably, the boys represented themselves and the college proudly and should be commended on their efforts. Thanks to Ms Malander and Mr Smyth for their coaching expertise and we look forward to the region finals in Term 3.

Soccer

Boys

Blustery wintry conditions greeted us for the Intermediate Boys soccer competition. Our day started off really well with a solid 4-2 victory against Glen Waverley SC. Our next game was up against a formidable opponent, Mount Waverley SC where we went down 6-0. And our third game we went down 4-1 to Highvale. Solid contributors were: Aidin, Hiru, Finn down back and Manny M. In the playoff we finished fourth where Glen Waverley scored a 4-3 victory. Our team: Nahuel, Reuben, Cooper, Apurv, Jordan D, Alexander, Samuel, Aaron, Marko, Finn (Captain) Emanuel, Aidin, Emanouel, Ben, Hiru, Lachlan and Blake. Many thanks to Jordan Wu who was our linesman for the day and our coach Mr. Duiveman.

Girls

Our girls had a fabulous day out on the field during the intermediate soccer round robin. We faced tough competition, and it is a demanding day with four games back-to-back. The girls bounced back from a loss against Glen Waverley to win 3-0 against Mount Waverley in round two. Some fabulous goals were scored, and Sienna W's free kicks (resulting in 2 goals) may just go down in history. We ended the day exhausted but satisfied, having played hard and finished third. The girls worked tirelessly, bonded as a team and, most importantly, had a great time!

Badminton

A valiant effort was made by all in the intermediate badminton competition, with both boys and girls teams performing at their very best. Both boys A and B teams were able to come away with 2nd place and both girls A and B with 3rd. All students were excellent representatives for the college. Very well done!

All Schools Cross Country Relay Championships

On Saturday the 15th of May at Norton’s Park, Vermont was represented by 4 of our finest Cross-Country runners at the Victorian All Schools Road Relay Championships. This competition is separate to our normal Government Schools competition. This competition includes all runners from all schools around the state, so our runners are up against the finest athletes that private schools have to offer. This event requires each student to run an individual leg of a 4-kilometre circuit and then tag the person next in line.

Vermont entered one team of 4 Year 11 and 12 students in the under 20’s 4-kilometre category. Unfortunately, Tom R and Alex J were injured prior to the event, so Alex took on the role of the spiritual leader and team captain for the event. Mitch D kicked off the event with an outstanding first leg, rocketing into first position for the first 500 metres. He then held his own throughout the leg and established himself in the top 7. He finished his run in just over 14 minutes. Ben K then tagged in for his leg, jostling in a pack of runners, Ben pushed on. Handing the timer over to Josh S, he managed to push Vermont higher up the leader board in a time just over 14 minutes. Our final runner was Ryan C, managing to keep the team position, where Vermont finished the day in respectable position 15th overall.

Well done to all our runners from the weekend, and good luck to all runners in the upcoming Region event on June 15th. We would like to thank Alex, Josh, Ben and Ryan over the years of service running for Vermont SC.

Mr Clements
