DAV competition
The Debating Association of Victoria competition is currently under-way and we have attended two rounds at Loyola College. We have two teams consisting of students in Years 7-9.
The team of Giorgio, Jake and Aqeel competed in Round 2 of the DAV competition and the topic was: ‘Should animal testing be banned?’ The boys were on the affirmative team and won their debate against Thomastown Secondary College. All members of the debating team have spent lunchtimes preparing their arguments and weekends meeting online in preparation for the competitions. The team of Mia, Selinna and Julia had a last-minute forfeit from their opposition but came to support their fellow debaters in solidarity. The team spirit is fantastic to see and reflected the ‘kind’ value of our school.
Our debating captains Soha and Julia, have been fantastic in their leadership by attending all meetings, writing and posting notifications, utilising teams, supporting newcomers and collaborating with the teams.
At present, both teams are preparing for the third round of the debating competition. For our next topic of debate, the teams will have to argue for free public transport. Newcomers to the team Alana and Talia will be competing in their first debate for the year (and for Alana, ever). All debating members have been providing mentorship and they have been busily preparing. Both teams have worked together, sharing ideas, arguments and rebuttals, as both teams are presenting on the same topic. Round 3 is on the 31st of May at Loyola College and spectators are more than welcome.
