Sports Report

Another successful week for College sport ended with a great day at the annual ICCES Athletics Carnival in Melbourne on Thursday. Please see a full report in this weeks newsletter from the captains. Many students achieved personal bests and it is always a great experience for our Year 7’s and first time athletes at this high level of competition. I would like to personally thank the Year 12’s who competed and showed great school spirit and pride in representing the school at this busy time for them in their final year of schooling. Some of them have been at this event for 6 years in a row – a fabulous achievement!

ICCES Athletics

Last week on Thursday we took a team of 70 keen athletes to Melbourne to compete in the ICCES Athletics competition at Lakeside Stadium. The day was overall a great success, with the college taking home the Star Trophy for the 28th time in the last 30 years, awarded to the school with the most points based on student population.

Standout athletes on the day include Luca Wagner, Eren Zehir, Magnus Howells, Karaoina Karatou-Keightley, Zoe Addinsall, Margo Hocking, Ruby Holmes, Oscar Hausler, Diamon Dickeson, Izack Mayfield and Jock Barrie. An extra special mention however must go to Jake Tonissen and Lachie Rees. Jake smashed the Year 9 Boys Javelin record with a distance of 38.94m, more than 6 metres longer than the previous record. Lachie managed to get the Year 10 Boys Age Champion, an outstanding achievement.

Despite all of these wonderful achievements, the best part of the day was seeing the college spirit on show, with everyone giving their best. Thanks to people filling in on the day, we had competitors in every event, a great achievement for a school of our size.

We as your athletics captains are so proud of everyone for their efforts and we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to lead the squad. Finally, a huge thanks must go to Mrs Williams and Mr Monk for helping run the shot put on the day, as well as to Rohan Garfoot for his coaching expertise on the track and field – and of course a massive thanks to Mr Alexander for his organisation on and leading up to the day.

Hockey Report

On the weekend of 15/16 May 2021, representative teams from across country Victoria met in Melbourne to compete in the annual Junior Country Championships. The Glenelg Association had four teams competing; under 13 girls and boys (playing at Essendon), and under 15 girls and boys (playing at Greensborough). The under 13 girls played four pool games across the weekend, not dropping a game. This allowed them to progress directly to the Gold Medal match, where they were victorious, in a 3-0 victory over Albury-Wodonga, and as such were named the under 13 girls Junior Country Champions. The team consisted of 14 players, of which 11 are current The Hamilton and Alexandra College students; Molly Meacham, Georgia Adams, Lucy Fraser (co-captain), Jemima Ross (co-captain), Grace Potter, Sophie Spence and Belle Wallis from the Senior School and Chloe Laidlaw, Millie Mould, Jessica Templeton and Evie Templeton from the Junior School. Evie, Belle and Grace were the goal scorers in the final, and were well supported by all players, who displayed great teamwork throughout the match. For a team that went down to Melbourne for some experience, to have some fun and build friendships, they showed that with great sportsmanship and respect of all of your players in the team, great things can be achieved.

Congratulations to Old Collegian and current parent, Penny Fraser on coaching the U13 side to victory.
