Integrated Topic - The Blue Marble

As part of our integrated unit titled ‘The Blue Marble’, the Year 3/4s are currently focusing on sustainability and have began to explore endangered species. To support their learning, our students were extremely fortunate to participate in an incursion run by Reptile Encounters where they were introduced to some of Australia’s most threatened and endangered wildlife. Students explored why species become endangered, what needs to be done to save them and how everyone can help. Animals in the demonstration include the brush-tail bettong, Mary River turtle, yellow spotted monitor, red-tail black cockatoo, Pilbara olive python and a salt-water crocodile.

Students from 4CB have shared what they took out of the session, including their favourite endangered animal and a fun fact they learnt about that animal.

‘My favourite animal shared was the red tail black cockatoo. A fact that I learned about this animal was that the yellow tailed girls are wayyyyy bigger than the red tail boys’ – Valentine

‘My favourite animal shared was the yellow spotted goanna! A fact that I learnt about the yellow spotted goanna is that the eat nearly everything and they can bite though anything! When the yellow spotted goanna puts the cane toad in its moth it dies straight away!’ – Yash

‘My favourite animal shared was the bettong. A fact that I learned about this animal was that it loves to eat mushrooms especially the truffle bit’ – Alyssa

‘My favourite animal shared was the saltwater crocodile. A fact I learnt today was that the saltwater crocodile was hunted for its leather and meat and was nearly extinct’ – Luke
