From the Team 1/2 classrooms

Mrs Julie Tainsh

Last week the all of the Grade 1 and 2 students became "Super Heroes,” (Habitat Helpers).

They travelled to 4 habitats around the world and experienced firsthand what problems are being faced by animals!

First they travelled to The Great Barrier Reef and learned how plastic bags are causing issues for the marine wildlife. Then they travelled to the jungles of Borneo and discovered how logging is impacting the natural habitats of the orang-utans and tigers. It was a quick trip afterwards to Antarctica and there they saw how the fishing industry is impacting the lives of fish, penguins and orcas! With no fish or penguins to eat, the orca suffers too! The last stop was in Tasmania and the students felt quite at home amongst the Tasmanian Devils, platypus and echidnas. But alas, they soon discovered how campers can litter their natural habitats, including their water supply, making surviving in the bush difficult.

The students, after seeing what had happened in these animal habitats (through narrated plays that they were acting in), discussed what they could do. They then donned green capes, becoming Super Heroes, and with the help of Earth Girl, fixed the problems of each habitat.

The Drama Toolbox facilitated a great incursion and the students all learned about how changes in environments and rubbish impact the natural habitats of many different animals.

They came away wanting to learn more about places around the world, animals around the world and how they can help the world to sustain all life.
