Visual Art

Mrs Diana Maric

What do students study in Visual Art?

Visual Art is offered as mandatory study in Year 7 and 8 (one semester each) and then as an elective in Year 9 - 12. In addition we also offer Photography and Digital media in Years 9 - 12. Students at Glen Innes High School have been successful in art in a range of competitions and in the HSC and there is a tradition of high quality art-making in the school. We pride ourselves on being able to offer access to a range of mediums including ceramics and wet photography. We also expose students to a wide range of art opportunities such as the annual Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane) excursion and workshops and exhibitions.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on: all practical tasks, diary work, half-yearly and yearly exams, and assignments. Your student will be issued with an assessment schedule which outlines the tasks to be marked. The assessment is common across all classes however there may be slight differences in individual tasks that teachers choose to explore. Most of the work will be completed in class, but the assignments should be completed at home, students will be given ample warning of the due dates.

The Visual Art Practice Diary (VAPD)

The VAPD is where much artwork takes place and because of their size these books may be left at school. Students can take their book home at times and are encouraged to finish things at home-but must be bought back!

Art Materials

All of the specialist art materials are provided for your student at school and we do our best to get very high quality materials. These are largely funded through payment of fees and we are grateful for those parents who pay. Students can be prepared for Art by having a lead pencil, an eraser, glue stick, scissors and coloured pencils. Cameras are useful for Photography.

Attitude

Art is a creative but also intellectual subject and we hope that you can encourage your student to take the course seriously. Art is an exciting avenue of study and creativity has a strong future in the contemporary world. It is also lots of fun! We look forward to working with you and your children. Please feel free to discuss any issues you have with any of the Art staff and keep the lines of communication open!
