Human Society and Its Enviroment (HSIE)

Mr Norm Cowan - Relieving Head Teacher

HSIE involves the study of people, cultures, societies and environments in different places and at different times. History and Geography are both really interesting subjects which help students develop a sense of their place in the world, an understanding of civic and global issues as well as analytical and practical skills which they can utilise in the world beyond school. In junior HSIE students study both History and Geography, though subjects switch over at the end of first semester.

History

In History we look at World History from ancient to medieval times and examine how human beings in the past have created their own unique societies and how these have subsequently contributed to our own.

Geography

In Geography we explore the world and develop skills and knowledge about ourselves and our place in the world. We look at topics such as the Global Environment and citizenship, learning about the physical and cultural aspects of the world and our impact on them.

Assessment

In both History and Geography students are assessed on classwork, one major assessment task and an end of semester examination. At the beginning of each semester students are given a detailed outline regarding assessment for both subject areas.

Equipment

To start the year students will need two A4 lined exercise books, pens, coloured pencils, lead pencils, scissors, glue and a ruler.

Extension

In HSIE there are a number of extension activities available including excursions and external examinations such as the Australian History and Geography competitions.

Electives and Further Study

Both Geography and History are mandatory subjects until Year 10. That means that all students in NSW Public Schools study these subjects. There are also HSIE elective options in years 9 and 10 which include History, Geography, Big History, Commerce and Aboriginal Studies. Years 11 and 12 electives include Modern and Ancient History, Geography, Aboriginal Studies, Business Studies, Economics, HSC History Extension, Legal Studies, Society and Culture and Studies of Religion.
