Years 7 - 10 

Students respond to a variety of texts critically, imaginatively and interpretively and compose accurate, clear and coherent texts. They will study a variety of genres including: poetry, drama, film, fiction and nonfiction. A range of literacy elements will also form the focus of learning to develop grammar, sentence structure and reading comprehension. Students will sit NAPLAN in Years 7 and 9.

 

 Students will be issued with an assessment calendar at the beginning of each year indicating relevant due dates. They will be assessed in a range of areas through formative or summative tasks, and are expected to attempt all tasks. Homework may include spelling, personal reading, class work or working on assessment tasks.

 

Years 11 and 12 

English Standard: Students learn about language and literature by exploring and experimenting with the ways events, experiences, ideas and processes are represented in and through texts. 

English Advanced: Students explore, examine and analyse a range of texts which include prose fiction, drama, poetry, nonfiction, film, digital and media. 

English Extension: Students explore, investigate, experiment with and evaluate the ways texts represent and illuminate the complexity of individual and collective lives in literary worlds. 

English Studies: Students explore the ideas, values, language forms, features and structures of texts in a range of personal, social, cultural and workplace contexts.

 

Equipment 

Students will require an A4 lined exercise book of at least 90 pages. Another book may be required later in the year. Students will require a range of stationery items, such as pens, pencils, coloured highlighters, scissors and glue. Students should also have a USB stick and earphones. 

 

Extension Activities 

Debating, writing and spelling competitions, Premier’s Reading Challenge and author visits. Students who have an interest in Drama are encouraged to study Drama as an elective in Years 9 to 12. Other elective units may also be available.
