Leadership Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya (Hello everyone!)

What a busy, yet wonderful week we’ve had in the Leadership Centre! And just like that, we are into our final few days of 2022! Although the end of the year is approaching, we still have many events and activities to look forward to! But first, let’s recap the week that was.

In Mathematics, students have been engaged in ‘3 Act Maths’ activities! This particular open-ended Maths lesson has been highly requested and enjoyed by students, as they find the problems to be very engaging. The lesson structure is as follows:

There are a wide range of focuses for each lesson and the structure can be applied to nearly any concept! Some problems we have solved include ‘The Clapper’, where a person aims to beat the World Record for the most amount of claps achieved in 1 minute. Have a go at home with the videos and links below - Think about: What do you notice and wonder about the clip? What is your estimate? What is a guess that is too low and too high? Don’t forget to think about your reasoning to justify your answers!

ACT 1: SET UP/TUNING IN

How many times will he be able to clap in 1 minute? Estimate.

Write an answer that is too high and too low.

ACT 2: COLLECT DATA, APPLY STRATEGIES AND SOLVE

Click the links below to get some clues that can help you in moving forward with solving this problem

How many times will he be able to clap in 1 minute?

Apply what you know to try and solve the problem.

ACT 3: THE REVEAL AND REFLECTION

How does your answer compare with what actually happened?

What strategies were the most effective?

What would you do differently?

It was so great to see students engaged with our open-ended tasks and taking risks in their learning by applying a range of different strategies to solve the problem. It was also amazing to see students collaborating and even participating in Mini Maths debates to prove their Mathematical thinking and reasoning!

In Writing, students were tasked with the challenge of creating an ‘Instant Plot’ using

Michael Wagner’s ‘Instant Plot Machine’. Back in Term 3, students enjoyed an incursion with author, Michael Wagner, who presented some fun tips and tricks to making writing fun! Using the prompt, ‘My bank account had 1 million dollars’, students thought about what the possible problem could be as well as three different endings. This includes a positive ending, one that may leave the reader questioning what happens next and one that would be considered ironic - something unexpected but in an amusing way! It was great to see students continue to take risks in their writing by including a plot twists, combining genres, varying sentence structure and including interesting vocabulary.
