Youth Mental Health First Aid training

Sally Kenney, School Psychologist

Before students commenced Term 3, 100 Kilvington staff, including administrative and support staff, participated in Youth Mental Health First Aid training.

Staff were provided with practical strategies to engage students in supportive discussions about their mental health, to provide information about mental health challenges, and to refer them to appropriate services both in and out of School.

Here are some quotes from staff about their experiences of the training.

Clare Soler, Year 6 Classroom Teacher

As a Junior School teacher, the Mental Health First Aid course provided great insight into the ways to best support and guide students who are facing personal difficulties. We are now empowered to know what we can say and do to provide better initial support to students in our care experiencing any kind of mental health issues.

Vanessa Grosso, Library/AV Technician

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course was a very full and at times challenging day, but as the saying goes, 'with great effort comes great results'.  As a Library staff member, we are often seen as a 'safe space' and 'time out zone' or a place of refuge for many students (and staff).

The course aimed to give all our attending staff members excellent tools, techniques and resources with the aim to assist any student we feel may be facing some personal challenges. It covered everything from the simple 'check-in', much like taking someone’s temperature with a thermometer, to what to do in those potentially extreme situations.

From a personal perspective, it’s extremely reassuring to know that the School is putting into place stronger avenues to help all our students and staff with mental health first aid.  It’s a life skill and can only benefit our community.

Centenary Foundation Day Service

On 20 June, we celebrated our Centenary Foundation Day Service at the magnificent St Paul's Cathedral in the city.

We thank students, staff, parents, special guests, former students and staff for contributing to the acknowledgement of our inspiring historical journey over 100 years.

It was a wonderful and memorable service.

Go Girls, Go For IT Conference

Joanne Low, Art, Digital Technologies, Media and Visual Communication and Design Teacher

On 21 June, Go Girls, Go For IT was held at Deakin University. Many students from Kilvington went to this technology conference.

Students got to learn more about technology-focused industries and companies in Australia during the showcase part of the conference. Another highlight was the group challenges across the day.

Overall, Go Girls, Go For IT was an enriching and memorable experience for all who attended, as it offered invaluable insights into the dynamic world of technology and its potential impact on various industries. It served as a powerful platform to encourage young talents, especially girls, to pursue their interests in technology and consider future careers in this rapidly evolving field.

Year 7s make sandwiches for Eat Up Australia

Jacqui Goldenberg, Community Service Program Director

A massive shoutout to our Year 7 class who managed to slap together an amazing 1295 fresh sandwiches in just an hour for our community partner Eat Up Australia!

Nathan and Eat Up’s awesome team of dedicated volunteers do a stellar job bringing nutritious food to the one in five school kids experiencing hunger across Australia.

World Refugee Day

As part of World Refugee Day, in Term 2 seven Year 11 students (plus two French exchange students) visited the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC).

They dropped off nine bags of donated food for the ASRC food bank and participated in a tour of the Centre.

They learnt about the different ways the ASRC supports asylum seekers, such as with medical

assistance, legal assistance, food and employment opportunities. They also heard about all the wonderful volunteers who assist at the ASRC. All our students were warmly welcomed and commented on how much they enjoyed the experience.

Kilvington's Got Talent

At the end of Term 2, our School Leaders organised a special assembly - 'Kilvington's Got Talent!'

They auditioned many acts. We had some incredible talent show up, ranging from bands to tap dancers to individual musicians!

At the end of auditions, we had six finalists. The audience got to vote on their preferences, with the Year 7 students having a clean sweep!

  • 1st place - Mark Ma, Year 7
  • 2nd place - Cassie Yeo and Sarah O'Neill, Year 7
  • 3rd place - Sofia Karagounis, Year 7

Congratulations to all the students who participated and showed us their amazing talents and skills!
