LIVING WITH COMPASSION

MS CATHERINE HOWISON - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Towards the end of Term 1 Year 12 student, Samantha Mullan cut her hair to raise funds for Wigs4Kids. Our community supported her very worthy cause with wonderful generosity. Samantha’s act of compassion will make a significant difference to a young person living with cancer in Australia. Samantha, with help from our community, raised $1724, surpassing her initial fundraising goal and is considering doing this again in the future!

We asked Samantha a few questions about her experience.

What made you decide to grow your hair with the plan to cut it for charity?

Honestly, I have no idea! I had the idea first in about Year 6 or 7 and then I cut my hair at different stages and finally decided that it was nearly long enough before isolation so I thought it was a good thing to do when the world was more open again.

How long did you grow your hair for?

I grew my hair for about 3 years over the Covid period.

Can you tell us a little more about Wigs4Kids?

The Kids with Cancer Foundation have been changing children's lives since 1998. The Wigs 4 Kids campaign is designed to help children in Australia feel more confident. Each wig that is made takes over 60 hours to make but will change someone's life forever.

The Kids with Cancer Foundation want “to be the most family focused children’s cancer charity in Australia recognising the comprehensive and wide-ranging financial responses needed for families of kids with cancer and the children’s hospitals they attend.”

What could be more rewarding than donating your hair to a child that is losing or has lost their hair due to being treated for cancer?

If you have hair (20cm min.) and are thinking of cutting it, think about joining our Wigs 4 Kids Campaign and donate your hair to help a sick child feel a little more normal. You can also turn your hair chop into a fundraiser, which helps us pay 100% of each wig required.

How did it feel when you first saw your new haircut?

I loved it. I was shocked at first when I saw how much hair had actually been cut off but I felt so much lighter. I was really happy that all of my hair would be going to someone who would have a massive smile on their face when they saw it.

Can you share with us some of the ‘blessings or lessons’ you have learned through your experience?

It’s not a hard thing to give to others. Especially when it is something as ruining as cancer. I would be happy to donate my time, money or hair to any cause. I just like to know that I am making a difference in someone's life and that they wake up with a smile on their face.
