PATHWAYS & CAREERS REPORT

MS SALLY LOONEY & MS BRENDA BRADY - PATHWAYS TEAM

PATHWAYS / CAREERS

May is going to be a very busy month for us, starting with the organisation of some excursions that we believe will be very beneficial to our students.

On Friday May 13th, all our Year 12 students will be attending the Victorian Careers Show at the Melbourne Showgrounds and give them an opportunity to speak with a wide range of representatives from Universities, TAFE’s, The Defence Force, Police Force, Ambulance Victoria, Master Builders and many more. There are also several Seminars students can attend if they wish.  On our way home, we will stop for a tour of LaTrobe University Bendigo.

All Year 10 students will be attending a Career Exploration Day in Bendigo on Tuesday, May 17th visiting both Latrobe University and Bendigo TAFE. Campus and accommodation tours have been organised at LaTrobe for all students but at Bendigo TAFE, students can choose which campus tour they are most interested in. More details will be sent home.

We are currently organising SuniTAFE visits for our Year 9 students and will also start to discuss the 2023 subject selection process in our Pathways classes.

Work Experience

At the end of Term 1 Year 10A students undertook a work experience placement in a career area of interest. From their feedback we know that students took advantage of this time to explore a variety of opportunities as well as learn about the skills and qualifications needed in the workplace.  We hope you enjoy some of the student’s reflections (shortened version)

I did my work experience with Jordy at McInnes Building Services. It was a very interesting and worthwhile experience as I was able to perform a variety of building tasks, such as replacing, repairing, removing, and installing. I learned some valuable skills and got a good experience of the work and the environment that I am leaning towards.

- Christian Anderson

I went on work experience to Swan Hill Primary School to see what it’s like to be a teacher. I was in a class with Year 1’s. There were many tasks that I completed while on work experience and I especially enjoyed listening to students read and help them with their writing. I also went to specialist subjects with them which included Music, PE, Indonesian and Science. Overall, there were some challenging parts to the job when working with young students but there were some fun parts as well and I really enjoyed the experience as teaching is something that I might consider in the future.

- Eliza Everett

For the last week of Term 1 I was lucky to get the opportunity to do work experience with Brendan Kelly Electrical.  Work experience has helped me choose what direction I want to go for my career and I learnt helpful skills like the basics of electrical work.

I was lucky enough to do work placement at Exposed Signage and Apparel based in Mildura. I worked with the designers to produce logo designs and prepare proofs for businesses. I was given tips and advice and taught different techniques from both designers that I can now apply to my future designs. One day, I was shown how they applied vinyl and designs onto vehicles and the techniques used to do so. My favourite part about working at Exposed Signage was meeting new people and making new friends.

-Wentworth Mitton

My time at Little Swans was an amazing experience and I’m so thankful for all the staff and educators taking their time out of their day to help me. My placement has confirmed my decision for my future career and I can definitely say I would 100% work with children and study to become an Early Childhood Educator.
