News from the Chicken Coop

Chicken Roster

Thank you to the families who have volunteered to go on the chook roster for Term 2. It is wonderful to have some new families joining in the fun of looking after our chickens. We still have a few weekend spots to fill in June, in particular the long weekend 11-13 June and into the July school holidays. If you are interested in helping out please email Mel mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with 2 or 3 preferred dates.

Egg Lotto

Egg Lotto is back! The next draw will be next Monday 9 May at assembly. There will be several dozen eggs available to win so get your $1 raffle ticket soon. The Environment Team will be out in front of the school on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15-3:30pm to sell tickets to parents. Students can also buy tickets in the Passive Play area most mornings or ask someone in the 5/6 rooms. All money made goes directly into the upkeep of the chickens

Did you know how to tell if your eggs are fresh?

All freshly-laid eggs, whether fertile or not, are covered with a natural 'bloom'. This is a thin, protective layer which is added to the shell as it travels through the hen.  It acts as a defensive barrier.  The technically correct word for it is 'cuticle' and it works by sealing the shell's pores and preventing air from penetrating. It's nature's way of protecting the chick from bacteria.  If it's washed off, the egg is left less well protected.  Although the membrane inside the shell offers an extra layer of protection it's not as effective and bacteria are more likely to seep through.  To retain this coating, eggs should not be washed until just before use.

Wonder Recycling Rewards Program

During Terms 2 & 3, St John’s is participating in the Wonder Recycling Rewards Program. We collect and send in any brand of bread bags to be recycled to help keep soft plastic waste out of the environment. So start saving your bread bags now and send them in to school. There is a box in the office area to deposit them. The more bags we collect the more credits we receive to redeem free sports equipment for our school.
