Health and Physical Education

F/1

We are grateful for the wonderful weather in the past weeks that allowed us to stay active as we learn more about our bodies and movements. Our Prep and Year 1 students improved their equilibrio (balance) skills through fun games and activities. We had many opportunities to build some resilience in aerobic activities that demand a bit of extra energy. Some of the activities that students most enjoyed are: Cruza el rio (Cross the river), ¡Congelate! (Freeze!) and Yoga animal poses. This week we have finalised our Bike Ed program where students gained more controls over their bikes and understood some basic traffic signs. Our youngest students also continue building new friendships in their houses as well as staying healthy!

2/3

The 2/3 students have been challenged to improve and refine their bouncing skills for two weeks. They bounced all type of balls, from size 7 basketball to tennis balls with right and left hand. This gave them the opportunity to get introduced to some sports such as basketball, netball and football. Students with greater bouncing skills have shown excellent collaboration skills by helping peers through demonstration and great feedback. Our students also have practised their habilidades de equilibrio en movimiento (dynamic balance skills) in different games and relay races. The most popular activity was “La Carrera de Sacos” (Sack Relay Race) where students had a fantastic time jumping like little bunnies! Year 2 and 3 students have successfully completed Bike Ed in the past two weeks, where they developed cycling skills and understanding of traffic signs.

Our students in Years 4, 5 and 6 have greatly enjoyed our handball (European handball) learning program. They learned how to bounce, pass, receive and shoot as well as the basic rules in the sport. While practising these skills, they practised ethical behaviour and fair play during game. Also, we have discussed topics about diversity and identity and how sport preference and an active lifestyle are a big part of them. Our older students have greatly enjoyed Bike Ed where they practised road safety through games and activities that involved traffic signs, multiple turns and dodging obstacles.

The interschool sport program keeps running and last week we played St Bernards in our school! Our students are having so much fun and are looking forward to further games and sport events Newlands will celebrate throughout the school year. We are so proud of them! ¡Vamos Newlands!

I would like to send a big GRACIAS to all parents who offered their help for Bike Ed program. It is being great to work alongside you.

Get into Sports!

Students at Newlands Primary School have been receiving a great introduction to sport through Physical Education classes and Sport Australia’s Sporting Schools Program. Help your children take the next step and play club sport.

Sport helps children make friends, develop new skills, build confidence and improve their fitness. It can also help children learn about teamwork and how to win and lose gracefully. Most importantly, studies show that children who participate in sport are happier, so start exploring the many sporting options available.

Sport Australia has partnered with over 35 national sporting organisations who offer quality sport programs for beginners and social players, right through to more structured competitions for children with a strong competitive spirit.

Visit the new Find a Club page on the Sporting Schools website and find the right sport for your child today.

Sporting Schools is an Australian Government initiative designed to help schools increase children's participation in sport and connect them with community sport opportunities.
