Year 9 News

Term 2 Week 2 Newsletter
Hello everyone and welcome back to term 2 of 2022. This term brings more opportunities for outstanding learning and growth with a range of extracurricular activities and events on offer to help our students flourish.
Term 2 also brings with it the colder weather and I remind all families that students need to be in school uniform throughout the school day. This includes uniform jumpers. For anyone that needs assistance to obtain uniform items please do not hesitate to contact the school for support.
We will also see a number of students participating in learning outside of our mainstream setting this term. The year 9 team wishes those students all the best on their journeys whether they be at the Alpine School Dinner Plain, or at other locations around the state.
NAPLAN will also take place again this term. For some students and families this may bring about feelings of anxiety or other negative emotions, for others indifference, and for some excitement. How ever you are feeling about the assessment program rest assured that the year 9 team and all staff at Kurnai College are doing their best to prepare students to do their best on the NAPLAN test.
Careers week
Week 5 of this term, that is the 23rd to the 27th May, is the year 9 careers week. During this week the year 9 cohort will complete a range of activities relating to all things careers. This will include resume writing, job searching, interview skills, and Morrisby assessments.
Morrisby assessments give students insights into their strengths and areas for improvement across a range of domains including; spatial awareness, mechanical, verbal, and abstract reasoning. These assessments will be followed up with a consultation to help students understand their results and link these results to career and training pathways.
Also in careers week we will be inviting guest speakers to come and talk to small groups of students to share their career stories and accomplishments. We will need volunteers for this so if you are interested in contributing your career story, please contact Glen Stephenson or Suzanne Benson on 5132 3700. All careers types welcomed.
Respectful Relationships
This term during homegroup time, will be delivered a range of respectful relationships lessons. These lessons are grounded in the field of positive psychology and will give students the personal, interpersonal and social skills to allow them to flourish in all aspects of their lives. This lesson sequence will also include a lesson on consent which will be delivered by the school nurse.
If you have any questions around the Respectful Relationships unit of work, or if you would like additional resources for your child, please do not hesitate to contact Glen Stephenson on 5132 3700.
Around the Classroom

Chinese New Year Flip Book
大dà家jiā好hǎo !(Hello everyone!) During the last couple of weeks, Year 9 Chinese learners have celebrated Chinese New Year in class. We investigated the customs and traditions of the New Year celebration. Students made a Chinese New Year Flip Book to show their understanding of the Chinese festival. Here are the examples of their excellent work.
9 Art Project
Students have been working on creating artwork that comments on serious local, national and international issues. They started with a frame and created a concept that became 3D to come out of the frame. They used a variety of mediums from cardboard to wire, clay and wood. They have thought critically about how to achieve their vision in 3 dimensions with the materials they had available. Students have created some amazing and diverse artworks that will be displayed around the school.
