Peter...The Cornerstone
Simon Peter is seen and heard as one of the significant people of Scripture during the weekend's readings. Simon Cephas Petros also know as 'the rock' (or stone) became, as his name suggests, the rock and cornerstone of our Catholic Church and the first Pope of the Catholic Church.
He was challenged in the Gospel by Jesus Himself as he was continually asked if he loved Him. In fact, Jesus asked Peter three times whether he loved Him, similarly to the three times Peter denied knowing Jesus just prior to His crucifixion.
Just as Jesus asked His apostles to throw out the nets to capture as many fish as possible, the significance of this reflects the mission Jesus was setting for the men to be Fishers of Men, going forward to cast their nets to capture people through the spreading of the Good News. The life of Peter is one of tremendous courage and faith as he is often depicted as the man from shifting sand to solid rock. A depiction worthy of such transformation and strength.
We reflect upon his aspiration and undeterred commitment and love to fulfill the role Jesus bestowed upon him. For ourselves, we are challenged to concentrate upon the different ways that we witness and love in our family and community lives and how this word 'love' can mean so many things to so many.
