Student Leadership

Student Leadership Conference (SLC) held by Alliance of Girls’ Schools, Sydney – January 13-15 2019

SLC 2019 is an annual leadership conference for girls organised by the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia. This year was the 20th conference that has been run, with attendees from all states of Australia as well as New Zealand, the Philippines, America and Zimbabwe. Meg, Georgia and myself represented Melbourne Girls College in Sydney in January 2019.

It was a jam-packed experience with 168 girls attending and staying at the University of Sydney’s Women’s residential college. Although there were many new faces and girls to introduce yourself to, the conference had a warm, welcoming atmosphere and maintained a positive upbeat energy that manifested itself into a sense of inspiration and empowerment as we completed the conference’s activities.

It was a packed agenda with many key note speakers, notably: Hayley Talbot, who in 2017 was the first person to solo kayak the 400km Clarence river; Annabelle Chauncy, who started a multinational NGO, School for Life, which has three schools in Uganda with an outreach of more than 2000 people; and Christy Hildyard, who through her organisation, Grace Pads, employs local women in Malawi to produce Menstrual Hygiene kits, reaching over 4000 girls.

We left the conference with a sense of vigour and excitement for the year to come and our term as school captains. We are so grateful for the opportunity to lead the school community this year and we will persevere to leave a positive impact within the school. We left Sydney inspired to do so and felt that we had been fortunate to acquire some knowledge to aid us on this journey by attending the conference.
