Parent Participation in the ELC
With Mother’s Day coming up soon, my thoughts settle with the image of a multitude of mothers and special persons arriving at our ELC doorstep next week for their Mother’s and Special Person’s Morning, to the excitement of our young ELC children.
So much preparation is involved in these events, and the joy of the occasion is evident in the children’s smiles. However, as a Kilvington community, our invitation for families and friends to visit us does not stop at these special events; we welcome parents and friends to attend a session, participate in helping (such as PMP), and share their special skills.
Recently, we have had a number of family members share their expertise with the ELC. For example, last term we were fortunate to have mothers share their knowledge and skills about Greek Easter, including how to dye an egg and its meaning.
We also have regular parent participation in our 4-year-old Perceptual Motor Program (PMP). In this program, volunteer parents ably help us support the children in various activity stations. Cooking is a favourite experience for the children and one in which parents can assist us in.
In the ELC, our door is always open to families and the Kilvington community to visit our centre and participate in the program. We promise to make it fun!

Year 3 Excursion - Exploring Indigenous Culture
This semester, Year 3 has been investigating Indigenous Culture.
As part of our ‘We are One’ unit of inquiry, we visited the Royal Botanic Gardens and took part in the ‘Connecting to Country’ schools program.
Even through the weather in the morning was ominous, the students had a wonderful time exploring Indigenous Culture, smoking ceremonies, ochre painting, string making and bush medicine.

Years 8 and 9 Manga Drawing Workshop
On 2nd May, we had a Manga drawing incursion. It was really fun and probably my favourite incursion so far. We all got to make our own Manga characters. First, we drew the outline of the face and then filled in the rest of the details. We learnt about how the difference in the position of the eyes and the shape of the head makes a difference to how old or mature the character looks. Everyone had fun and did a really good job!

VCE Studio Top Arts, NGVI and Gasworks Excursion
In late April, eight VCE Studio Art Students set off to the NGV Ian Potter Gallery to view the 2017 season of Top Arts.
We were fortunate enough to not only view the spectacular artwork from the best students from last year's cohort, but also look through their folios. We were all amazed by the amount of effort and work that had gone into producing such a variety of artwork, and were not only inspired but left feeling that the journey we soon would be taking ourselves would definitely be a rewarding one.
After Top Arts we walked to the NGV International and viewed an exhibition by legendary Australian photographer Bill Henson, as well as other examples of excellent contemporary photography currently on show. It was interesting to see how photography can be presented in a variety of ways, representing many themes and contexts.
Afterwards, we hopped on the tram down to the Gasworks Arts Park in Albert Park where the quirky Visual Arts Manager and friend of Mr Knap's, Tracey McIrvine, gave us a really engaging and thorough overview of the facility. We got to walk through and talk to current artists in their studios about the work they do. It was a really fun and beneficial experience, giving us an insight to how different artists work in their chosen medium.
I can't speak for all of us but I certainly came home and sat down to do some art as soon as I could!
