Extend After School Care

Our Recap

We have very quickly jumped back into the swing of things at After School Care. With a keen eye on ensuring that everyone is having a great time, the children have been showing great initiative and inclusiveness.

Our big focus for the past two weeks has been on scientific experimentation. We have made monster toothpaste as well as our very own bouncy balls! There was varied success with the explosions of the toothpaste, with some only reaching halfway up the bottle, whilst others overflowed and created a mess! We discussed how our experiments don’t always work as hoped, and what actions we can take to possibly change outcomes.

We also continued to explore and educate ourselves on healthy snacks. The toasties were always going to be popular, but it was great to see the kids trying new vegetables in them. The veggies also proved to be great snacks to munch on while we waited for the toasties to cook. What was surprising though, was the success of the savoury muffins! We were initially hesitant to try them, however once we sampled a tiny bit, they were demolished before you could count to three!

The children also utilised their engineering skills, designing boats out of matchsticks that could float as well as holding up to five marbles. The marbles also lead to the kids making some highly creative 'Marble Mazes’ using toilet rolls, paper plates, cups and anything else they could come across!

As part of craft-work, the kids explored more ways to make colour and paint. The most popular way was ‘Ice Painting’ where the students made paint out of water and dye, froze it into ice cubes and then produced some masterpieces!

Community Project

It is with great pride that I announce that this term's After School Care project has been completely initiated and driven by the students. With much of the discussion based on helping other children in need, the students are aiming to raise money with all proceeds going to charity.

The students are in the midst of fine tuning their ideas and marketing, with the goal of setting up a stall towards the end of term to sell the products they create.

I urge you to keep your eyes peeled for posters as well as watching this space for further information. Again, all the ideas and action have stemmed from the children and it would be great to have any and all support offered!
