What's happening in our classrooms

Literacy

Students have been learning about the purpose, text structure and language features of recounts. We have used a variety of rich mentor texts to model the use of time connective and describing sentences, past tense verbs as well as compound sentences. Students have also been practising how to answer ‘head’, ‘hidden’ and ‘head’ questions.

Students have written recounts about experiences they have recently been involved in such as: our excursion to the city, our visit to the local park, our morning routine before coming to school, our Woodwork Incursion and our weekend activities. Teachers have supported students with their writing using the Stephen Graham modelled writing approach and during the next two weeks, teachers will be gradually releasing the responsibility and encouraging more independence from students.

Numeracy

Students have continued their learning about multiplication and division using a variety of games, concrete materials and hands-on experiences. They practised using number lines to solve problems involving multiplication and division.

Students have also learnt about chance and the likelihood of different events happening. They have familiarised themselves with chance vocabulary such as ‘certain’, ‘likely’, ‘unlikely’ and ‘impossible’. Students enjoyed playing games of chance such as tossing coins, rolling dice and playing ‘Rock, Paper & Scissors’. In Area, students used informal units such as tiles to estimate and measure the area of common objects. Students made comparisons between areas of objects by superimposing.

Inquiry

Students have now completed the Lesson Zero phase of our inquiry unit on Geography. They were given the opportunity to work in small groups to ‘unpack’ the curriculum achievement standards for Level 2 and rewrite them in language that they could understand. They also worked in their groups to record their curiosities, concerns as well as things they were interested in creating to learn more about Geography.

We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion to the city and learning more about Melbourne’s famous landmarks such as Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, Royal Arcade and Melbourne’s GPO. After our tour, we had a great time exploring ACMI, a museum of film, TV, videogames and art.
