PE and Health

These past two weeks in PE, we have finished our unit of work on Badminton and moved onto learning the skills of cricket.

For their last lesson in Badminton last week the 3/4 students played a mini class competition. It was great to see everyone putting together the skills they had learnt to be able to have a mini game and a good rally between themselves. This was a big improvement from the first session when many struggled to hit the shuttlecock only one or two times to themselves. They all had a great time with this. The 1/2 students also worked on playing rally’s with their friends and this improved significantly.

The Prep students were able to use the racquet well when using a balloon, but once the shuttlecock were introduced this was extremely hard, so they had a fun lesson on catching and throwing a ball with their partners as they got ready for their cricket sessions.

With the International T20 World Cup competition being played in Australia now, I thought it would be great to introduce our students to the game of cricket. We have started with some catching and throwing and they had a focus on bowling, one of the most difficult skills to learn and use, as everyone just wants to throw the ball, but students are getting the hang of it. It takes lots of time and practice to get this right and consistent.

Also the grade 3-6 students started their Bike Education program with an in class lesson on the safety requirements and possible safety issues when riding a bike. Students are very excited about the riding which is starting with their bikes next week for the grade 3/4s.

For Health, students are learning about how the body works with a focus on how they can make sure they lead a healthy and active lifestyle. In week one students learnt about the digestive system and how eating different foods impacts their digestive system and their health. This week we moved onto the circulatory system and how the heart, lungs and bloods circulates around the body to feed our body and organs the oxygen and energy we need to survive.

It is so exciting to see the students so engaged and interested about how their body works.

Culture Studies

Last week in Culture Studies we have started to travel to the country of Greece. Students began to discuss their prior knowledge of Greece; they were introduced to and learnt about Greek tradition.

Students were able to locate Greece on the world map and that it is part of Europe.

We compared and discussed the size of Greece to Victoria’s land size. We looked at other neighbouring countries next to Greece and how Greece is made up of many, many islands. Greece’s capital city is Athens with a population of almost 11million people, the language they speak is Greek, their religion is Greek orthodox, and their currency is in Euro’s.

Students learnt about the Greek flag where there are nine stripes, five are blue that represent the sea and the sky and the other four stripes are white which represents the waves and the clouds. The white cross signifies the Greek Orthodox religion. Students then were able to make their own Greek flag by choosing to paste small blue cut square paper pieces onto the Greek flag template or using blue oil pastel to colour in the appropriate stripes.

Visual Arts

This week in Visual Arts all students were able to complete their clay pieces.

Foundation students were able to paint bright, beautiful colours to their clay piece.

Year 1/2 students were able to put their final features on their painted textured clay bird wall hanging by adding pipe cleaners to create a handle and threading beads onto the pipe cleaner legs.

Years 3,4,5 & 6 students were also able to paint bright, beautiful colours to their clay pieces.

All students were introduced to or revised how to weave paper. They learnt about the warp and the weft when weaving. Students were able to weave a paper mat or turn their weaving mat into a little handbag.

At the beginning of this term our fabulous Year 6 students have been working and continue to work on a ‘Leaving Your Mark’ art project. The students would like this to be a surprise for our school and the community so you will find out what it is closer to the end of the year. Watch this space! 😊

Library Update

Our Library has been running smoothly all year and all the students have loved borrowing books.

We also have an amazing library team that meets every Monday and Wednesday and have been a great help with keeping the shelves tidy, decorating the library, returning, scanning and cataloguing books and putting stickers on them.  Thank you to Seb, Leon, Riley, Joseph, Zara, George, Hugo, Jasmine, Will, Paul, Patrick, Daniel, Ramona and Sunny. Also, a big thank you to Sahana, Mitch and Sophie who helped at the first half of the year.

We now have 3177 books by 1964 authors on 2406 different subjects on our shelves, ready to be read. A huge thank you goes out to all the families that have donated books.

There will be prizes at the end of the year for the kids and classes who have borrowed the most books. Right now, first on the leader board is Saiesha A with 35 books so far this year. The class with the most borrowed books is 34A! Congratulations, and to all the rest, keep reading!

Our very first Scholastic Book Fair will take place at the end of November. More information will be given to the students in a couple of weeks about this. The Book Fair will be Christmas themed and should be great fun! It will give students and families the opportunity to find something new to read and maybe even get some early Christmas gifts sorted. I cannot wait to see everybody there.
