Fantastic 3/4

Year 3/4

Week 4, Term 4

What a fun filled week the 3/4 students have been involved in. The Colour Run, The Special Assembly and Starting Bike Ed at the end of this week were some of the highlights during the last couple of weeks. The Colour Run had to be our favourite, but we know there are still many more exciting times to come in term 4!

What have we been up to?

In reading, we have continued to explore description texts by looking at a number of different articles, videos and books about the MCG. The students found it interesting when reading about the MCG that the AFL was not the only event that takes place at the MCG. When reading these articles and books we also discussed what language features were incorporated into these types of texts, as well as highlighted which part of the text related back to the descriptive structure the students have been learning about.

In writing, the students have researched questions about the MCG to know what is made up of a descriptive introduction. The students also watched videos and looked at photos to write descriptive sentences about what they can see, hear, taste, smell and touch whilst being at the MCG. The descriptive sentences they came up with were unique, as every student had a different experience about the MCG. They also wrote about why people would enjoy visiting the MCG and found some fascinating facts which we shared as a class. We can’t wait to see how the students will be using all the information they found this week to create their own independent descriptive texts about the MCG next week.

In Maths, students have been learning about money. They were introduced to money through open-ended activities, such as, how many ways can you make $1, $2, $5 and $10. The students were also provided with their own budget and with this budget they had to work out how many items they could buy and how much each item cost as they explored a number of different restaurants and supermarkets. It was wonderful to see that some of the students in our class were able to get items to the exact budget we gave them.

In Science, the students are all so excited that we have started our space unit. They have so many questions that they wish to explore about planets, stars, galaxies, moons, black holes and more. The students have begun their research on a planet of their choosing and found out a whole lot of information about their particular planet. We shared the information they found out as a class and the students found it very interesting that there were planets which had more than one moon, how cold or hot the average temperature on a particular planet was and what the planet they researched was made up of. There is still so much more to find out about, the world is their oyster.

In Inquiry, students have found out that certain types of food give us more nutrients than others and how our body breaks down these particular types of foods. They also explored the healthy food eating pyramid and we had a discussion about what types of foods are everyday foods and sometimes foods. The students enjoyed hearing and comparing what types of foods they eat throughout the day to other students.

In Civics and Citizenship, the students have learned about rules and laws, the difference between the two and why laws and rules are necessary in our society. They have also started to make their own laws and expressed why they chose that particular law to their peers and teachers.

Just a reminder for students and parents:

  • On the 2nd of November (straight after the long weekend), the 3/4 students will be attending the Melbourne Museum and IMAX excursion for the day. Please be mindful that we have to be on the bus by 9:00am sharp, so it would be wonderful if all the students could come to school promptly on this day.

Here are some photos of what we have been up to over the last two weeks:
