Middle School Building  is very operational.  We have interactive projectors in all four classrooms and the library and kids kitchen.    We are working through the last of the defects list. Our students definitely test the quality of everything.  The tactile tiles at the bottom of the steps provide an anti-slipping surface. Our students tested the glue and found it needs to be stronger! I am sure there are other items they will put to the test.

Technology, remote and  online-learning

The school has invested heavily in technology over the last four years. Last year the school invested $101,000 and in 2020 budgeted for $108,000 in new equipment and to replace obsolete and broken hardware. This ensures that our students have maximum opportunity to develop skills using technology as well as using technology as a tool in everyday life. Technology is not a choice it is an expected part of the school curriculum.

Working remotely has forced all staff to learn new skills. Most could use "Facetime" and "What's App" on their phone but transferring that skill to group conversation through WebEx had been a steep learning curve. Even the School Council has had to learn to be part of an on-line group meeting.

The school has responded to the requests of parents for the loan of an iPad or computer. During the last round of remote learning, some parents were surprised at how their child was able to access on-line learning.  Some have now purchased a device for their child with confidence that it will be used.

Today basic software needs to be purchased as an addition after buying the computer. I have had feedback that some parents were very pleased with the link to free  "Open Office" software I gave previously so I am including the information again: Apache OpenOffice  https://www.openoffice.org/  It is similar to MS Office.

If you are purchasing your own computer Quang -our ICT Manager suggested that the minimum requirements for a laptop are :

  • Windows 10 Operating System
  • Core i3 or i5 processor
  • 8G of RAM and
  • 256 GB minimum storage.

If the cost of internet is a financial challenge, we have been advised that NBN Co has made available free or low-cost home internet services - details on the plans can be found at: COVID-19 Education Assistance Package (https://www.nbnco.com.au/campaigns/covid-19/education-assistance package).
