Careers & College Partnership News
A Special Year 10 and Year 12 Edition!!
Year 10 Parent info session
On Tuesday 28th July we held an information session for parents to explain Yr 11 courses and the choices students needed to consider. This can be viewed at https://bit.ly/2Po3Rq . I’d encourage every Yr 10 Parent to watch this with their child.
Year 10 counselling changes
Last week we had a plan for how Counselling would proceed for Yr 10’s. By the start of this week, when we returned to remote learning, this plan was outdated. We are going to now undertake the following:
Students in remote learning will be completing tasks over the next week in Industry & Enterprise class that will help inform their choices. These are accessible on Compass and in their class’ Teams group. Families are being encouraged to discuss these choices and where needed reach out to campus Careers staff or their I & E teacher. Should parents be happy with these choices they should sign the student’s copy of the subject selection sheet.
Then, from later next week, students will be getting contacted by experienced subject counsellors (through Teams or via phone). Together they will discuss:
- aspirations and pathways
- planned subject choices
- whether they are appropriate to their abilities (potentially identifying a teacher who would be better placed to confirm this)
- their USI number, if they are having difficulty getting this
- if they are choosing a VET through the TEC, what is required by way of applications
The counsellor will record the choices made, but this will need to be confirmed by their parent either through a pic of the signature on the student’s copy of the selection sheet or an email or phone call to the counsellor.
It is important that Year 10 parents understand that the counsellors may be undertaking between 20 and 60 of these kind of calls (we have nearly 400 Year 10’s). They are time consuming but very important. We will rely on students making themselves readily available when called and that they have done their homework and gotten themselves ready for these calls.
There is no precedent for what we are going through. We may not get everything right in the process but we appreciate your understanding and support.
Year 12 Parent info session
On Wednesday 29th July we presented an information session for all parents of year 12’s and their children. It addressed the various employment options as well as training and further education. VCAL and VCE Parents (and their students) are strongly encouraged to view this. If you missed it you can see it at this link https://bit.ly/3grM2mL . Students then received, via Learning Mentor groups, a Pathways Pack. The pack has been designed for those considering any kind of employment OR further training. Local organisations would love to support you in your plans and have provided these to assist. We've encouraged Yr 12's to take them home and keep them safe and to generate a discussion around the dinner table about options available.
More detailed VTAC advice will be provided via separate presentations in the coming weeks.
Yr 12 Student VTAC info. sessions
Information sessions will be conducted online for students interested in applying for tertiary study through VTAC. The first of these, an introduction to VTAC and applying was shown last week and is available on this link https://bit.ly/3k4dbyh . Students have been asked to use this to register and put their first application into VTAC. The application can be edited as many times as they wish once initially done.
Future VTAC support For Your Child
We are constantly communicating resources and information through the College Careers Facebook page, the Yr 12 FB groups, Compass and Microsoft Teams Yr 12 groups. This information may be targeted at Yr 12 students themselves, their parents or both. Once students have registered and applied through VTAC they can then take advantage of setting up their SEAS (Special Consideration to support their ATAR results) and VTAC Scholarship applications.
We’d strongly encourage parents and students to go to www.vtac.edu.au and explore the amazing resources available including the Yr 12 Student Guide, Course pre-requisites tool, Course Search engine, Demonstration applications (where you can practice SEAS, Applications…) and Fact Sheets.
A detailed presentation produced by VTAC is available for parents at this link is available at https://bit.ly/30rJWNT
We will be publicizing to the Yr 12’s in the coming days an opportunity to come on to their campus and get assistance with registering/applying from Neighborhood Leaders and the Careers team
Get help with the VTAC application process
VTAC will be running a series of online events for year 12 students and their parents.
