Year 10 Futures | RACV Social Media Project

RACV Social Media Program is designed to encourage Victorian secondary school students, to investigate a road safety issue relevant to young road users. Students are empowered through the program to creatively and effectively present a road safety social media campaign – igniting the awareness and conversation amongst young people about the importance of road safety. Students can enter as individuals or as a small team of 2–6 students.

Our Year 10 Futures students participated in the annual RACV Social Media Program Competition. Our students showed dedication, commitment and creativity during the process and is evident in their completed projects. Students needed to work through a process in which they needed to create a design brief, within this process students needed to choose between the two topics of Peer Passengers & Distraction, research the issue, exploring what makes a good social media campaign, develop a key thought, and developing a social media campaign.

WHSC did extremely well competing against other schools and had a number of our students shortlisted. We did receive a top entry from Renae V (10C, images at the top of this article) and we would like to congratulate her on her effort. The RACV’s feedback for Renae’s project was: “Renae has provided a well detailed design brief of the steps she has taken in the RACV Social Media Project, particularly her analysis of what makes a good campaign and how to apply it to her own campaign. Her social media campaign has a clear and strong road safety message.”

Wheelers Hill Secondary College was placed in the top 7 schools across the state for the RACV Social Media Program, a great effort to all the students and staff involved.

I will leave you with a message from the RACV to staff and students: “RACV would like to commend all teachers and students who participated in the program this year, particularly in persisting during remote learning in Term 2. I was impressed by the quality of concepts we received.”

Renae's RACV Social Media Program Reflection

Project Images 1-4 (Above)

"The purpose of the RACV Social Media Project was to be actively involved in investigating issues relating to young people and their driving habits on the road. Our job specifically was to research the effects of distractions and peer passengers on youths. I chose the topic of peer passengers. Throughout the process of completing my social media campaign I was faced with a number of challenges. What type of media would I use? What would my message be? How would I relate the effects of peer passengers to the statistics and pictures I chose? I solved these problems by observing the types of social media that my friends enjoyed using, and researching popular formats of things such as Instagram stories and memes, those of which I used in my own campaign. Overall, my experience participating in this project was great and it helped me learn and be able to better educate my peers and many others of the dangers that peer passengers may cause while driving, and more importantly how to avoid them." - Renae V.

Year 9 Media | Stunt Video Challenge

Year 9 Media students have produced a cracking collaborative short film, showing that the creative spirit can still flourish even under lockdown and with the added challenge of remote learning! Amazing work, team!

Young Change Agents Design Thinking Challenge

Three hardworking Year 9 Students have had the opportunity to put their design thinking skills to the test this term through the development of their COVID-FOODWEB App which aims to solve an issue we are all currently facing in the Coronavirus Pandemic. Will M, Kiara T, and Pelin K were able to gain mentorship from a team of knowledgeable professionals from Telstra, the Young Change Agents social entrepreneurship foundation and the Monash Tech School to develop their minimum viable product. See below their submission for the competition and wish them luck with the results!

School Sport Victoria Live Stream

Congratulations to Kara O’G of Year 10 who was recently asked to join a School Sport Victoria live podcast. The episode was streamed live on 17th July via the SSV YouTube channel. Here is Kara’s account of her experience.

"I was recently asked to be involved in the School Sport Victoria live stream with special guest Annabelle Smith, who is an Australian diver. She has competed in the 3m springboard synchronised event at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, and won a bronze medal in 2016 while placing fifth in 2012.

This was an amazing experience learning about Annabelle’s life and how far she has come. I was able to have an opportunity to ask her some questions, unfortunately, I was not able to join the video call, but I was still able to ask my questions. Some questions that I asked were, what you think about right before you dive, what inspires you to dive and how old you started diving.

If you would like to visit, the YouTube live stream and see the answers to my questions and many more questions that were asked the site would be at the bottom of the article, and if you were ever interested in joining the SSV live stream and asking some questions I recommend you contact them." - Kara O'G.
