Writing

This term the 5/6 students are focused on information texts. Here are a few samples of their writing:

The Gippsland earthworm is one of Australia's native earthworms. Australia has around 1,000 types of native earthworms. The giant worm is the largest earthworm found in Victoria. With a scientific name of megascolides australis. The first European settlers to find Giant Gippsland earthworms thought that they were a snake it was so large.

The short-beaked Echidna is the smaller of the species, and they vary in colour depending on their location. In the northern regions of Australia echidnas are light brown, but they become darker and get thicker hair further south. In Tasmania they can be black. All Echidnas have sharp spines covering the back of their short bodies. The spines are made from kerotone, the same substance as human hair and fingernails.

How we organise ourselves

Our central idea for this unit is ‘Consumer decision making impacts economics’. We had some rich discussions about our central idea and this is what we came up with:

Religion

Within Religion this term we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of subsidiarity and Participation. This means all people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. Subsidiarity requires that decisions are made by the people closest and most affected by the issues and concerns of the community.

COVID-19

We explored some of the issues facing our community and the government’s response to COVID 19.

Here are some examples of what the students would have done if they were in power:

I would have done what New Zealand did because they have been able to keep their cases at 0.  I would have completely isolated and have people order their food and supplies online.

I would do what Dan Andrews did but think I would have done more testing earlier in the pandemic and would have made it compulsory to wear marks months ago. Countries, where they have been wearing masks for a longer period of time, have seen decreases in their cases of COVID.
