Senior School Sport

As the College moves through this term, I am reminded daily of the small and simple things the staff and students are doing well that help the wheels turn in our College Sport program.

Thank you to the Parents and Carers who have completed the online College Permission Form. Your assistance in moving away from a paper trail of notes has helped the College become more efficient in student management. The fine tuning of this system is frequently monitored to ensure it works in the student’s favour.

The students have engaged in their selected sports over the last few weeks and positive feedback from NSW Cricket and College staff is well received and is a key indicator that the boys are enjoying their sport time.

I encourage all students to become more responsible for their actions as we move into the MCS Summer Sport trial period. Any student who is interested in trialling for MCS Basketball or MCS Cricket are asked to register with Mr Cook in person, at the Sport Office over the next 2 weeks. Any student involved in the SGC Touch Competition will also need to reselect a sport/activity before Week 6.

Our College 1st Grade Rugby League team had a tune-up game against Patrician Brothers Fairfield last Thursday. The starters got the job done with a 16-0 lead at the break before resting some key personnel to help Coach Bullock refine his team selections for future games. Fairfield clawed back but the 1st Grade team got the job done, eventually winning 18-16.

Australian Schoolboy Cup – vs Bass Hill High School @ Campbelltown Stadium

The boys came into the game with very minimal preparation, 5 training sessions and 1 trial game is a tough ask to go straight into the Schoolboy Cup. However, it was amazing to see the boys play like a team that had played for years together.

The ability of the opposition was an unknown, but one thing was for sure, they were a well-sized team. The St Gregory’s team came out and did exactly what Coach, Michael Bullock asked them to do, play simple footy, complete and numbers in tackles.

The tries started to flow with great work around the ruck from Liam Fitzsimmons and Cruise Tweedie. Guymer, Lennon, Aslan, Sutton and Fitzsimmons chimed in with tries from multiple areas, through the middle breaks, a chip over the top with support and a bit of razzle-dazzle.  We went into half time leading 30-0.

With tough competition waiting for us in the next round in Blacktown Patrician Brothers’ College, we wanted to ensure we put in the best performance possible to set a good standard.

Thankfully, we continued to play simple footy up the middle which allowed us to create space for our backs to show their skills. With the opposition, unfortunately, fading with their defence we hit some great holes with push and now tries came to Clarke, Lennon, Tweedie and Ward, including a great put down off a cross-field kick from Munro to finish the game with a score of 60-2!

A great and memorable performance from the boys which will put us in good stead ready for the quarter-finals.

Coach: Mr Michael Bullock

SGC Touch Comp

On a different note, as the MCS Touch and AFL competitions have been cancelled, the students were given the opportunity to participate in the St Greg’s Touch competition. Players were divided into a Junior and Senior competition with six to eight teams in each age group. The competition will wrap up in time for the MCS Summer trials.

Two rounds have now been completed with many players displaying the skills and banter that would have placed us in a good position, had the season gone ahead. Mr Coffey and staff are to be congratulated on their efforts in organising and managing the students thus far.

MCS Summer Sports Trial information

Senior Basketball (Summer Sport) will be held throughout Term 3 from Weeks 1 to 10.

Senior Cricket trials will commence in Weeks 6 -10 on College grounds. Students trialling for these teams will be eligible to represent the College in all Senior Cricket competitions throughout the 2020/2021 seasons.

Students who are not selected for Summer teams in Term 3 will need to return to House Sport or select a Recreational Sport option.

Junior Basketball will take place from Weeks 6 to 10 of Term 3. The venue for these trials will swap between the College Hall and Minto Stadium, pending exams.

Junior Cricket trials for MCS teams will take place in Weeks 1 to Week 5 at an indoor facility then move to College grounds in Weeks 6 to 10.

This will ensure all students who trial, will get adequate time to display their skills, talents, attitude and behaviour throughout the term.

The College will offer development programs in Cricket to ensure the development of skills needed to play Cricket for the College. These courses will run in the first 5 weeks of Term 3 for a select number of students.

Sydney FC have confirmed they will run a 4-week Football Program for the students in Year 7/8 House Sport. This program will commence in Week 6 of this term. The program will aim to keep the students engaged in an active program whilst learning the fundamentals necessary to play football.

House Cup

Merits are continually being added each week courtesy of the College staff acknowledging student’s excellent contributions to learning, in and out of the classroom. The House Point totals have been refined of late as point allocation and distribution was skewed.

All students are asked to check their Co-Curricular Activities to ensure they are accurate and they have received points for their participation.
