2023 BIG BASH CRICKET GAME

By Jeremy D (Year 12 Student)

Last Tuesday, our staff and Year 12's clashed in their annual cricket game. With great sunny conditions and a nicely mowed pitch thanks to our gardeners. We saw some interesting calls from our umpire Jeremy, but nothing could help his Year 12's as the teachers won for a 4th straight year.

It was great to see all the teachers and students down at the lower oval cheering everyone on and ready to take a crowd catch from Mr Sugumar.

We saw outstanding performances from Dr. Roberts in the field and Dan N behind the stumps, as well as Jack W and Charlotte A when batting and Mr Sugumar and

Mr De Kretser for their bowling.

Thanks to all the Year 12's and teachers that took part on the day.

AN IMPORTANT MEETING

On Wednesday 14th March our School Council Chair, Chris White and our Principal Peter Cliffe met with our local federal MP Aaron Violi.

Aaron Violi is the federal member for Casey, and BHCS is located in his electorate. We organised the meeting to raise our concerns about the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) consultation paper in relation to its inquiry into Religious Educational Institutions and Anti-Discrimination laws. Christian and other faith based schools in Australia have long been free to give preference to employing staff who share or who are willing to support the faith and beliefs according to which the school is conducted.

The ALRC consultation paper proposes to greatly restrict this freedom by requiring religious schools to employ staff who may not share or support the beliefs of the school.

For BHCS to remain an authentic community of faith and continue to provide the holistic education sought by our parents, we consider it essential that the right of our school community to operate in accordance with our beliefs be maintained. Aaron is supportive of our position and has committed to advocating on our sector's behalf.

YEAR 9 OUTDOOR ED STUDENTS TACKLE TWO BAYS HIKE

By Paul Lewry (Head of Middle School)

Last week our Year 9 Outdoor Ed students ventured out on their first hike for 2023. Students spent time at school planning meals, looking at maps and learning the skills to help lead and navigate a group.

As we arrived at the start of the Two Bays Trail in Dromana, there was plenty of excitement and energy but after a gruelling 15km students were happy to pull into camp and rest their heavy legs. The evening brought a chance for students to test their camp cooking skills, with some sharing in a delicious hot meal and some eating whatever got stuck to the pan. With some rain and weather coming students headed to tents early and got some well-needed rest.

The final day was a beautiful autumn day and with just under 10km to go students set off at a cracking pace.

All in all the students did a wonderful job as this overnight experience helps students prepare for their extended journey in early Term 2.

SPECIAL ACCESS TO LUNA PARK

By Emily Roberts (Year 12 Physics Teacher)

Last week the Year 12 Physics class went to Luna Park for a Physics Activity Day (PAD).  On PAD days, the park is closed to the general public, but open for school groups of VCE Physics students.  PAD days give students the opportunity to 'feel' the forces acting on them on the rides and roller coaster, rather than just doing calculations about them.

Dr Roberts, Mrs Eastwood and the eleven Year 12 Physics students went on almost all of the rides available. We experienced changes in 'g forces' and 'weightlessness' on rides that dropped us quickly from a height or spun us backward, forwards, sideways or upside down, all in the name of science!

On each ride we used a mobile phone app to collect data.  The app uses the built in accelerometers on a mobile phone to collect data on the 'g forces' we were experiencing on each ride.

We had a fantastic day, and after we had subjected our stomachs to the sensation of rising, falling, spinning and somersaulting, we all went across the road to Maccas for lunch!

And, miraculously, we have survived another Luna Park excursion where no stomach contents were displaced by staff or students for the duration of the excursion!
