Year 7 News

Cam Bruce & Gareth Hose | Year 7 Coordinators

The term is moving very quickly and staff and students alike welcomed a long weekend. As assessments are introduced and completed, some students are beginning to feel the pressure and may be finding it difficult to keep track of what is required in each of their subjects. Parents and Guardians can support their student by asking a few questions at home or taking some time to help them sort through the work that comes home with them. Don’t forget to ask if they have written down assessments in their diaries! Please remind your child that it is OK to speak with their teacher during or after class about things they are finding difficult. Students looking for additional help are welcome to attend either the Maths Help sessions on Wednesdays at 3:30pm in M14, or the English Help that is offered each Wednesday at 3:30pm in M wing.

Students received two immunisations last week. If your child did not receive these immunisations at school, they will need to attend your local GP or local council sessions to ensure they are protected.

A reminder that students must wear the Horsham College school uniform as per the school’s uniform policy. Students wearing the wrong uniform, parents/guardians must let coordinators know via SEQTA direct message or complete a written note.

All Year 7 students should have received a SEQTA direct message from Jason in regard to the upcoming Black Ranges Athletics Sports and nominating themselves for events. Please complete the Google Form and select all events that you are interested in trailing in. Any further information, please see Jason or Liana at the Gym.

In English at the moment our Year 7 students (Mainstream and SEALP classes) are working hard on their study of the text Two Weeks With the Queen. As the students will have read the text it will count towards their Fully Booked challenge, which is where students are required to read a minimum of 8 books for the year if they are in a mainstream class, and 12 books for the year if they are in a SEALP class. Breaking it down, Mainstream students should be reading at least two books a term, and SEALP students should read a minimum of three.

Students should ensure they are discussing the books they are reading with their teachers, and that the books or reading material is appropriate for their reading ability. Students are encouraged to negotiate alternative reading materials with their teachers. We would like to take this opportunity to remind all students that they are required to bring their own copies of texts, including their MyEnglish grammar books, to classes so they can be annotated and used to prepare for assessments.

Term 1 Reports will be released via SEQTA Wednesday 15th March. This report provides a summary of progress made during the first 8 weeks of Semester 1. They will also indicate whether your child’s subject teachers have made a request to meet with you at Parent Teacher Interviews which will be held on Wednesday 29th March.
