Alternate Programs

Liam Offer - Assistant Principal VCM VM

Welcome to Week 7

Naplan is upon us for our junior students and this can be quite a stressful time. Please reach out to your student’s teachers if you have concerns for your child sitting NAPLAN and what this might mean for the mental health. We want to ensure all parents and students that we will support each and every family at this challenging time.

Uniform – Reminder to parents and students that we are at week 7 and all McKenzie Creek students should be in uniform. Please reach out if you do not have appropriate uniform as the weather starts to change.

Parent Teacher interviews – We are a few weeks from parent teacher interviews. If your child is struggling, can I ask you please reach out to their teachers. We will endeavour to do what we can to support you and your child in whatever they need.

LYNCHY VISIT

On Tuesday 28th February Alternate Programs students were thrilled to have the ‘Burnout King’ himself Andrew Lynch visit school.

Lynchy took time to answer many questions from very excited burnout enthusiasts. He talked about the cost of his car but that he gets sponsorship from different companies. His greatest triumph was in Perth at the Motorplex comp and he even bought the huge trophy in to show students. He talked about how lucky he was too to have travelled the world with his car to do burnouts including to New Zealand and America. Interestingly students talked about a game his car features on and he talked about he receives royalties for this. Importantly he reminded students of the importance of getting a good job because if they want to seriously get into burnouts it’s quite an expensive sport. Lynchy even bought his famous blue Corolla in on the back of a trailer and was kind enough to let students sit in and take a heap of photos. The final thrill was when he started it up and gave it a roaring rev on the trailer. An experience no doubt many of our students will never forget.

BLUE GROUP

Centre for Participation

This term we have been lucky enough to have teamed up with Centre for Participation who have been providing blue group students with many amazing opportunities. Thanks to Danielle Watts, students have enjoyed making muffins, had a tour of The Station and heard about council’s Youth Advisory group and painted on canvasses. The highlight though for most was when we went to Tim Williams Music Tuition shop. Tim was kind enough to give students and staff a lesson in guitar. One student even enjoyed a bash on the electric drums. The best part of the visit though was when we had a video call with the famous drummer of the band Bliss N Eso Dan Kerby. Dan talked about his amazing experiences as a drummer but also growing up in Ballarat starting with jobs he hated before pursuing his passion in music. All experiences so far have been inspiring to students in many ways and there are so many more great activities coming up. We are very grateful for this partnership with Centre for Participation.

First this term we went to the Centre For Participation with Danielle and Karen. We did a Code Of Conduct.
Then our next visit we made choc chip and banana muffins.
Next, we did painting on canvas of a sunset. We visited the Station and played basketball.
After that we went to the music shop with Tim and learnt how to play guitar.
Finally the things that I enjoyed the best was going to the music shop.

The first day, we went to the Centre of Participation. On Mondays and Fridays, we go there with Danielle and Karen.
The second day, when we first did a lesson, we did cooking and baked banana muffins with choc chip.
The third day, we went to The Station and had a tour and some people played basketball.
The fourth day, we did painting and did landscapes with a YouTube tutorial playing. But I didn’t want to do it.
The fifth day, we went to the music shop and played the guitar and had a video call with, Dan Kerby.
My favourite thing was the music shop.

Blue Group Art students attended our first outing to the Horsham Art Gallery as part of the HRCC Spark Art Program. Students were fully engaged with the local artists who made interesting objects out of clay. The also completed a guided tour of the gallery. Well done to all involved!

MCKENZIE CREEK

Lynchy came to our school with his car. He told us how much the car cost to build and that he started in 2006.  He also showed us a photo of when he went to America. It was awesome! He revved his car twice.
It made me so happy when I heard him rev it, it was so loud and I loved it. The morning was the best ever and I want him to come back.
