Maths camp

During the January 2023 holidays, I was lucky enough to be one of the 60 students across Australia selected to attend the National Mathematics Summer School in Canberra. The 14 days long camp was held at John XXIII Residential College on the ANU campus.

Prior to the course I felt unsure of whether it would be worth spending essentially two weeks at a nerd camp, yet beyond expectations it turned out to be one of the best choices I could’ve made going into Year 12. Each day consisted of a scheduled structure allowing for both lectures and dedicated study time supervised by world class tutors. In the mornings we would do a lecture followed by what was called tutorials. Then lunch and another lecture and tutorial all concluded by 3:30pm to then be allowed complete free time. The daily lifestyle was consistent with one of a uni students, we had our dedicated lecture time but then had complete free rein of Canberra during our free time, it had both aspects of education and social equaling out. Additionally the structure of the camp provided me with excellent new skills regarding study habits, tips and tricks for maths and overall a much broader idea of what is truly accomplishable.

Over the two weeks we studied three topics being, Number Theory, Algorithms, and Geometry. Though these topics may sound familiar to the average VCE student studying mathematics, they were like nothing I had ever seen before. The depth at which mathematics goes is truly overlooked within highschool maths. It exceeded every one of my expectations, the maths was difficult yet so rewarding when you got an answer correct. Coherently the social aspect was excellent, each student there like minded, dedicated and overall some of the best individuals you could be around. The friendships and connections I have gained across Australia since have been one of the most rewarding parts.

I would highly recommend the camp to any student who has an interest in maths. Not only are you surrounded by individuals similar to you, you are tutored by some of the world's greatest mathematicians all with individual fields of work and interests. Ultimately exposing you to the possibilities high school maths doesn’t tell you about, meaning you come out of the course with an increased knowledge in so many fields. One of the best experiences I have had.

Ella Bennett (Year 12)

STEAM Captain

Victorian Softball rep

Madison Gambrell (Year 9) was selected into the U16 Girls Victorian State  Softball team.

State teams from all over Australia competed in January at the Waverley Softball complex overfour days. The competition was fierce and played at a very high level with Victoria finishing fourth overall. Madison played outfield and was grateful for the experience and the wonderful coaching provided.

It's always a great acheivement to wear the blue and the big V for Victoria. Congratulations Madison.

Moomba Waterski magic

MGSC is delighted to spread the news that Chelsea (Year 10) and Jemmah Paton (Year 12) will be part of another dazzling water ski show on the Yarra River during Moomba. Last year the Southern Waters Ski Show team made headlines with their spectular show. There two shows nightly from Thursday 9 to Monday 13 March with a daytime performance on Sunday.  Chookas to Chelsea and Jemmah and all involved.
