Principal's Message

Yesterday we celebrated International Women’s Day.  We were fortunate to have a past student, Lou Mapleston, address our students at the whole school assembly on her journey since graduating from the College.

We acknowledge International Women’s Day each year, through a whole school assembly, and we congratulate our 2023 Student Leaders. These leaders may be future leaders beyond our school gates and whilst they are attending our school they make MGSC a better place to be for every student.

International Women’s Day is particularly important to our school, given that we are one of the six remaining government girls’ schools in Victoria.  Government girls’ schools like ours are a rarity and something to be cherished and prized.

We are a school that celebrates inclusivity, and where every student from everywhere can experience success.  It is a school where students are not afraid to give something a go.  It is a school that celebrates diversity in all of its forms.

At the time that MGSC was established, way back in 1955, the likelihood of girls studying beyond Year 9 across the state was slim. Through the creation of approximately 30 girls' schools at the time, this trend gradually changed.

I really value International Women’s Day because it reminds me that I am extremely fortunate to have had an education, to participate in the workforce and to become a teacher and ultimately a Principal of this wonderful school.

But is the work to have women treated equally finished yet? Has a world where there is equality for all women been universally achieved?  Is the workforce that our students will enter into inclusive?   Unfortunately, not always, I am afraid!    But change does happen when we stand united and bring these issues out into the open for debate and discussion.

Each student at MGSC can, over their lifetime, make a collective contribution to achieving that goal.  The rights that we take for granted today have been attained through protest actions and academic debates.  They were won, and not gifted, through courage and work – it is fitting that this is our school moto!

Every student leader who received recognition for their role at the assembly, earnt that recognition through their actions and their self-belief that they could make a difference to the lives of their fellow students or the wider community.

Each student in our college has the power and opportunity at MGSC to contribute to a better future for women just by using their voice and speaking up.

I hope that all of the women in our school community have enjoyed a wonderful International Women’s Day!
