Supporting students to achieve academically...

What Is Testing Week?

This week is known as 'Testing Week' at SMPS. Testing Week occurs each term. You do not need to prepare your child in any way for this week; all assessments will be done during class time.

A reminder of how assessment is often defined in the world of education.

Formative Assessment:

  • What: This is gathering and interpreting student learning as it is happening in class.
  • Example: Students are asked to answer a question on their mini whiteboards. The teacher then scans the class to assess which students have demonstrated the skill and who may need support or extension.

Summative Assessment:

  • What:Evaluating a student's development of knowledge, skills and understandings at the end of a set time (such as the end of term or end of a unit).
  • Example: Students are asked to complete a test such as Essential Assessment or PAT.

Formative assessment occurs in every lesson of every day. Summative assessment is the main focus in Testing Week.

We make sure that families receive the outcomes of all summative assessments. It is important to us that families receive their child's results and that this is done in a clear and transparent way. Results are shared through Student Dashboards each term and are also used to inform the marks within our Semester Reports. After Testing Week, teachers will be busily entering and analysing student results. We look forward to seeing how the students tackle their summative assessments this week!
