F-6 Music – Term 2

Term 2 sees all F-6 students preparing musical items (songs, dances and instrumental pieces) which they will perform at numerous assemblies later this year. I will be collaborating with students in all aspects of the performance so that they enjoy a positive experience when showing the school community what they have learnt during their weekly Music lessons.

Grades 1-6 students will be able to practise their performance items at home once I add them to their Showbie folders.

Parents, I will inform you (well in advance!) of performance dates and times for those of you who would like to attend and support your children.

Showbie Music Folders (Grades 1–6)

All students have access to their year level’s Music Showbie folder.

Why use Showbie?

I add activities we’ve focused on in our lessons as some students like to:

  • practise, consolidate or extend their knowledge in a particular area
  • share information, songs, dances with their family
  • provide students with the opportunity to share their suggestions, interests with me

When I add to Showbie, I let students know this during our music lesson. If they would like to explore that particular topic at home, they are encouraged to do so outside of the music classroom. Please note - this is not mandatory!

Some student comments on Showbie:

One Grade 5 student was so interested in Machu Picchu after being introduced to our Peruvian warm-up, that they did further research about Machu Picchu at home.

Choir

Choir trials for students in Grades 4-6 have now ended. Thanks to everyone who came along to find out what happens in a School Choir. Even if you have decided not to commit to being in the 2023 Choir, I’m so proud of you for branching out and trying something new. Well done!

I am thrilled to announce we have 34 enthusiastic students making up the 2023 BPS Choir. They rehearse each Monday from 1.00-1.30pm in the Music Room. Welcome (and thank you!) to Mrs Robinson (1FR) who will be assisting me with Choir this term!

Here are some photos from our rehearsals:

Music Appreciation

How do we make informed choices about the music we like to listen to,

perform or create if we are not exposed to a diverse range of music?

Each week a different musical genre (or theme) is played over the loudspeaker at bell times so that students become familiar with a variety of genres and artists. All songs chosen are child-appropriate.

The musical genres showcased in Term 2 will be:

  1.   Mixed Genres (including ANZAC Day)
  1.  1990’s
  2.  1930’s – 1940’s
  3.   2020's
  4.  Indigenous Australia
  5.   Songs from Musicals
  6.   Orchestral Music
  7.   Songs with KING in title
  8.   Mixed Genres

If there are any songs or genres you would like to recommend, I would love to hear your suggestions. I can be contacted at lisa.shacklock@education.vic.gov.au

Thanks so much for your support of the BPS Music Program. It is very much appreciated!

Have an awesome week!

Yours in harmony,
