“Kid’s who read succeed!”
When people spend time in libraries - reading, learning, dreaming, connecting, relaxing and being entertained - we often find we are being educated without really trying. Education and the ability to read go hand in hand and are one of the most powerful tools to enhance life chances. Many studies have shown that time spent reading is a fundamental building block for developing a love of reading and life-long learning.
To catch the reading bug read find what you are interested in and link reading to that interest. Here are some hints for students, teachers, and parents:
- If you are playing video games: ask where the stories are from, explore what the characters and landscape represent – Assassin’s Creed could lead into a wonderful journey through history.
- Most movies begin as a good book, and the book often has more detail than the movie. When watching a movie explain and discuss the differences between the original story and the movie. Which version was better? Why?
- Find books or magazines about your favourite sport or player in the library, or even at your local newsagent.
- Help your child create their own reading space that is inviting, comfortable with good lighting.
- Be enthusiastic and encouraging to build your child’s reading confidence.
- Model reading behaviour by reading newspapers, magazines and books yourself. Talk about and share what you are reading.
At the library we have taken steps to create a more appealing space for our students to use. The new layout includes reading nooks nestled amongst books which have been arranged in genres to help students easily find their next reading adventure. We are adding new books including popular manga titles, teen fiction and magazines.

“The best advice I ever got was that knowledge is power and to keep reading.” -David Bailey
