Acting Principal’s Report

Welcome back!
The start of term 2 is a hectic time in all schools, and even more so here at MGC.
The first few weeks of term will see our Year 10 camp, Year 9 students participating in the Morrisby Careers Testing, our annual House Athletics Carnival, the second round of Parent Student Teacher Conferences, our Information evening for prospective Year 7 2022 families, and our Open Day tours. All of this is above and beyond the outstanding work being done in every classroom, every day.
While writing the welcome speech for our Information evening, I took a moment to reflect on the wealth of opportunities a student at MGC has on offer each and every day. Our philosophy of taking positive risks and trying something new in the inclusive MGC environment is a fantastic prospect, and one that I hope every student is willing to take advantage of during their time here. What better way to build meaningful connections and find your passion, particularly as we shake off the shroud of COVID19.
Acting Principal
As you would have seen from communications sent to families during the school holidays, it was announced that I was the successful candidate for the Acting Principal role for the remainder of 2021. I am very honored to be able to contribute to our community in this role while our substantive Principal Karen Money is leading the DET Tutor Learning Project. This is an amazing opportunity, and I thank our families, students, and staff for their well wishes.
We are in the process of appointing an acting Assistant Principal for the remainder of the year and will keep the community informed as this process is finalised.
Consent
The public conversation around the issues of consent and gender equity highlights the significant social issues our students face as they take on guardianship of our complex world. These are vital topics for our society to examine through open transparent and supportive conversations, and schools are right at the center of this important work.
The age-appropriate teaching of sexuality and consent has been part of the curriculum at Melbourne Girls' for some time, and we will continue to foster relationships to help our young people build social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Staff will continue to be supported in their ability to teach these important skills through ongoing professional learning, and we will continue to show our unwavering support for the diversity of our community.
When coupled with our focus on the building of critical and creative thinking skills, and the teaching of ethics and intercultural understandings, I think you will agree that our students are well placed to continue to lead the charge against these inequities.
Have a great week!
