Wurdi Baierr Stadium

The Surf Coast Shire’s largest infrastructure project to date is officially open. The $13.5 million Wurdi Baierr Stadium sits between the Civic Centre and Surf Coast Secondary College in Torquay North, and has been welcoming an increasing numbers of sport and recreation groups since its soft launch in mid-January. Pronounced “word-ee bay-ear”, and named after the Wadawurrung words for “big gathering place”, the stadium comprises four courts (three of which are new), meeting rooms, change facilities, a cafe (which will open in the coming weeks), all abilities design features and extra car parking.

The stadium offers a range of sports and fitness-related activities, including basketball, netball, futsal, badminton, volleyball, exercise classes and kinder gym. It is also used by Surf Coast Secondary College during the school day.

Senator Sarah Henderson, South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman, Shire Mayor Libby Stapleton and Surf Coast Secondary College Principal Erin Wright officially opened the stadium on Monday 29 March 2021. CLICK HERE to read the full story.

Sports Academy

The SCSC Sports Academy students have recently concluded a great first term of their 2021 program. We congratulate all students on their commitment, effort, personal improvement and achievements through the term, it was great to be able to get the program up and running again and we are all looking forward to the rest of the year.

Special Guest Coaches:

The Sports Academy athletes complete several sessions each term with special guest coaches to support their regular weekly coaches in conducting their training sessions. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn from another perspective.

During Term One, the students were lucky enough to engage with the following guest coaches:

  • AFL: Matt McName, current U19 Mens Coach at South Barwon Football Club and part of the Geelong Falcons Rep team coaching staff.
  • Netball: Former Australian Diamond and Melbourne Vixen Player Tegan Philips.
  • Soccer: North Geelong Senior Coach Robbie Noggler.
  • Basketball: We are looking forward to welcoming Greg Smith from the Geelong Basketball Academy for some guest coaching.

High Performance Sport Excursion to Deakin Sports Precinct:

During the last week of Term One, the Sports Academy students attended their ‘High Performance Sport’ excursion. Starting off the day at school with a range of movement, running technique workshops and a 2021 goal setting activity, the students then travelled to the Deakin University Waurn Ponds Sports Precinct for the afternoon. Here, they completed more workshops at the world class facilities and professional fitness testing with ACE Performance, based on AFL Draft Combine testing. Lots of learnings were taken away and the students are looking forward to their Term Twp ‘Nutrition & Recovery’ excursion!

Years 11 & 12

Environmental Science:

Last term on Wednesday 31 March, our Year 11 and 12 Environmental Science students were lucky enough to survey the diversity of the intertidal zone at the Barwon Heads Bluff.

The Marine Discovery Centre guided students to apply their skills learnt in the classroom, to the real world. They surveyed the limestone platform using transect lines and quadrats. Students were lucky enough to see a Maori octopus, ocellate sea stars, and elephant snails. A big thank you to the Marine Discovery Centre, Steve Fenwick and mother nature for such a great morning!

Top Designs Exhibition:

A big congratulations to Pippa S in Year 12, who exhibited at the Top Designs 2021 opening at the Melbourne Museum. This year's exhibitors provided us a glimpse into the future of design and how aspects of design can be incorporated into many features of our ever-evolving world, including our health, environmental and creative industries. Well done Pippa!

VCE Art:

Last week we were lucky enough to have world-renowned artist John Kelly welcome our students into his art studio (virtually) from Ireland. John stayed up past midnight on Wednesday morning to share insights about his work with a group of our VCE Art students. His presentation was outstanding, he gave many helpful hints and it was inspiring to hear all about his back-story as an artist. Thank you to Susan in our Art Department who led the students in a meaningful discussion related to their VCE topics. CLICK HERE to find out more about John's work.

Year 10

Visual Communication and Design:

Year 10 Visual Communication and Design students worked hard last term on a folio of technical drawings. These one point perspective rendered house drawings were created by Poppie W and Charlie B. Great work!

Studio Art:

Year 10 Studio Arts students were immersed in the RONE Geelong exhibition last week. Students are studying portraiture and the roles of galleries in presenting and conserving artworks, and they were able to experience the very rare occurrence of an ephemeral artwork in a public gallery setting. Students were curious and engaged wholeheartedly in the exhibition, discussing the potential narratives created by RONE's juxtaposition of beauty and decay.

Year 9

Our Year 9 Leaders have organised a food donation drive for Pay It Forward Day this week. Torquay Food Aid are looking for non-perishable groceries, baby nappies, personal hygiene items and hair products to go in care packages which are sent to families in our community. If you are able to donate some of these items, please give them to your child to bring to the College and add to the collection box which is in the Year 9 office. If you are unable to donate, please see how else you can pay it forward and share kindness each day! Thank you Olivia T, Toby K, Grace D and Ayva L for putting this together.
