Anzac Commemorations

ANZAC Services

Student leaders across all year levels led ANZAC services this Friday 23rd of April for students in Year 7, 8 and 9 at Elisabeth Murdoch College.

Our 2021 service saw the showcasing of the talented students we have here at EMC.

Year 10 Music students performed the National Anthem followed by Gus Morrison who played the Last Post and Rouse on trumpet. Charlotte Dawson and Lachlan Culton shared poems they had written and Teagan Shaw presented on the centenary of the Royal Australian Air Force.

Students reflected on the sacrifices that men and women have made in serving our country throughout history and the values of mate ship, compassion, courage, selflessness and loyalty.

ANZAC Poetry competition

This year our students at EMC were invited to take part in a poetry competition to commemorate ANZAC day.

Both first and second place winners recited their poems with pride at the EMC ANZAC day ceremony in the auditorium today.

We would like to congratulate all of the entrants- the caliber of the poems was outstanding:

First place was awarded to:

Lachlan Culton:  K91

On April 25th, 1915, 16,000 men risked their lives for you and I,

Landing in a foreign country, stricken with a setting sky,

As their small, wooden boats struck Gallipoli’s shore,

They all knew, they were ready for war.

Distant shots were heard, as they began their pace,

ricocheting off the cliff face,

The fire continued, wounding and killing many that day,

But also true is that they fought in every way.

They fought for our freedom,

through the darkest of nights and coldest of days,

for not only you and I,

But also, for this land we call home.

106 years later,

It is now our and generations to come, duty to repay them,

with paying our respects on this important date,

And to commemorate their fate.

Lest we forget.

Second place was awarded to:

Charlotte Dawson:  M83

Some time ago the world was in war,

they were destined for an unknown land,

Many cried as the ships left the shore,

Soon enough their feet hit the sand.

The danger was grave,

but they never did run,

As so many were brave,

When being followed by the gun.

Forever far from home,

Now peacefully they rest,

In our hearts never alone,

We wish our fallen the best.

For those not met,

Lest We Forget.

Special commendations go to:

  • Dashiell Attwood-McInnes
  • Carra Morrison
  • Sienna Ogier

ANZAC Wreath competition

In commemoration of ANZAC day this year, Elisabeth Murdoch College students of all year levels were invited to make a wreath at home.

Typically, wreaths are laid at memorials or graves in memory of those who have served or died in past conflicts.

Wreaths are commonly made of rosemary, laurel or flowers, and EMC students are encouraged to try and use natural or sustainable materials where possible.

Congratulations go to Charli Prentice and Jessica Fletcher who were joint winners!

They have both been rewarded with a THRIVE point and their entire class will get to enjoy ANZAC cookies!
