Chaplain's Message

A Love Tap

We can be Leaders without holding formal positions of leadership.

In a TV interview with film critic Charles Champlin, actor Dustin Hoffman told this story:

During the filming of the movie Midnight Cowboy, a particularly demanding scene was scheduled for shooting late in the afternoon. By then, Hoffman felt too drained to do his best and was complaining to his costar, Jon Voight.

Voight touched Hoffman's arm and said, "You're great, you can do it. Now do it!" Hoffman did. He went on to win an Academy Award for his role.

Hoffman said of the incident, "Voight gave me a love tap. He unleashed my potential."

I love the idea of a "love tap." These days we have to be more cautious to avoid being misconstrued but a timely tap can so often speak louder than any words. May we be generous with our affirmations and be creative in finding ways to encourage others along the journey.

God bless. May you have a safe and happy holiday.
