School Council President - Hans Simon

School Council update

On Tuesday 23rd March we held our School Council General Meeting where we co-opted committee members. It is my pleasure to welcome back Hans Simon, Cheryl Evans and Carol Caffrey and welcome new parent members Peter Neaves and Donna Francis.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to outgoing parent members Tamsyn Lenne, Meg Capurso and Jo O’Doherty aswell as Tim Elliott who held the student representative position for two years.

All of our outgoing parent representatives no longer have children at our College and I would like to take a moment to recognise both Meg and Jo for their significant contributions over many years.

During her 6 years on Council, Meg held significant positions including the Vice President position for 4 years and last year she was our School Council President who supported us through the challenges of 2020. Meg has been a significant contributor on the Environment sub-committee and also Curriculum.

Jo has a strong connection with our College having been a student and staff member here previously. She joined School Council in 2016 and held the Parents and Friends Association (P&FA) representative for the last 3 years. During her time on School Council, Jo has been an active member on P&FA and the Uniform subcommittee.

I sincerely thank them all for their significant contributions to Council and their ongoing support of the College out in the community.

We are finalising the Student Leadership elections across all year levels and I look forward to announcing the rest of the Student Leadership positions early next term. As part of the role of Year 10 Leader, one of the students will take on the vacant student position on council for the following 2 years. The other student representative is Jackson Jacobs (Year 11) who was successful in joining the council in 2020 in a two year position.

The mandate of school council is to always strive for the “…best possible educational outcomes for students at their school…”. Parents and families make a vital contribution to this mandate, not only through school council but also through the P&FA and other involvement. We continue to seek input from families, to ensure that the collaborative nature of education at Maffra Secondary College remains strong.

In the meantime, if there are any questions or suggestions regarding governance or the strategic direction of the college, please ask. A full list of the new school council is published below:

We still have two parent vacancies and two community positions open for any parent/carer or member of the community. Please contact the College on 5147 1790 or email maffrasc@education.vic.gov.au if you are interested in any of these positions or would like to find out more information.
