HARMONY DAY

Harmony Day is celebrated in Australia on the 21st of March each year.  It is a day to celebrate our rich and diverse communities and how we can all live in harmony with each other.  As the Year 5 and 6 were on camp, Harmony Day was celebrated on Monday 29th of March at SMDP.  In small groups, the Year 5 and 6 students organised activities for the rest of the school.  The Senior students engaged the rest of the school in activities connected to Harmony day with the learning intention to teach them about the significance of Harmony Day and to learn about other cultures.  It was wonderful to see many students dressed in traditional clothes or wearing orange which is the colour to represent Harmony Day. Some of the Year 6 students made a banner by using their hands dipped in orange paint, which was hung in the yard with the word 'Harmony 'and the theme 'Everyone Belongs'.

Activities included:

  • Making a flag that was a combination of all the flags in the child's family.
  • Painting the flag that their family originated from.
  • Learning games from other countries
  • A scavenger hunt for flags from around the world.
  • Making a paper chain of people and decorating them to show how we all look unique.
  • Learning words from other languages.
  • Colouring posters connected to the message about Harmony Day.

All students enjoyed the activities and the Year 5 and 6 students discovered that it was not as easy as they had anticipated to teach others!

It was a wonderful experience for all involved and we believe at SMDP we embody the true meaning of harmony day in the way we respect each other and learn in harmony.
