Holy Week and Easter
The most important events that the Church celebrates are the death of Jesus on Good Friday and His rising from the dead, on Easter Sunday. It was because of what Jesus did on these two days that we have new life. Jesus gave His whole life for us, even dying on a cross to show us the forgiveness of God and to bring us a new life free from sin. We have prepared to celebrate the joy of Easter during the season of Lent. During Holy Week, we have followed Jesus on His journey to the cross through our prayer liturgies presented by each year level, taking a different event – Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday (Washing of the Feet; The Last Supper) and Good Friday (The Stations of the Cross).
The Scriptures tell us three days after they had watched Him die, Jesus appeared to His followers and talked, walked and ate food with them. Jesus had risen! Jesus really was alive again and this was good news for His disciples! The celebrations of Easter help us to wonder at the great mystery of the new life given to us by Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. (KWL, bk3 p.38-9)
“Sad Saturday”
“When Jesus had been taken down from the cross, His body was placed in a tomb with a large rock rolled across the front to seal it. Everyone went away. They were sad about the death of Jesus. The following day was the Sabbath – a holy day, so everyone stayed home to pray, to wait, to wonder.” (Luke 23:44-49)
Luke 24: 1-12 Easter Sunday: “He is not here, but has risen.”
After the school holidays, we will share the story of Easter Sunday and Scripture of Jesus’ Resurrection.
As we come to the end of Lent and Holy Week, and approach the resurrection of Jesus at Easter, let us read part of the message from Pope Francis:
“Dear brothers and sisters, every moment of our lives is a time for believing, hoping and loving… May Mary, Mother of the Saviour, ever faithful at the foot of the cross and in the heart of the Church, sustain us with her loving presence. May the blessing of the risen Lord accompany all of us on our journey towards the light of Easter.” (From the text of the Message of the Holy Father Francis for Lent 2021, entitled: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem” (Mt 20: 18). Just a reminder, that we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Eucharist (First Eucharist) on Sunday 2nd May at the 10:00 am Parish Mass in St Martin de Porres Church. The Eucharist Home Program has been sent home with all the students who will be receiving the Eucharist for the first time. Year 3 / 4 Vegetable Garden
As part of their Inquiry Topic, a group of year 3/4 students (with the assistance of Sami), planted a mini-vegetable garden to show how we obtain food from plants. With the fertiliser “juice” from our worm farms and the use of our newly purchased watering cans, they have helped the plants to survive and grow. We are very proud of their gardening efforts! Soon, the silver beet and bok choy will be ready to eat!
