Swimming Carnival

The 2018 Mater Dei Catholic College Twilight Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday 8 February, once again in very hot conditions at the OASIS.

Despite the hot weather, students from all Houses continued to compete with great spirit under the College catch-cry of “5 Houses- 1 Home” in diving, championship and novelty events, with a Mater Dei chant even making an appearance in a show of College unity. House pride was on the line and the House Coordinators and Captains led the way with a highlight of the night once again being the House Chants, taken out by Carroll. A big thank you must go to all staff for their hard work in ensuring another successful College event.

The Mater Dei Swimming Carnival aims to provide opportunity for competition as well as participation. In 2018 a highlight of the carnival once again was the inclusion 50m events for Athlete’s With a Disability (AWD). It was great to see an even broader array of students given the opportunity to represent their House and show the school community their ability.  The novelty events again proved popular and gave all students the chance to represent their House and contribute points for the carnival. It was great to see so many parents cheering on the competitors throughout the night.

Thanks must go to Patrick Metcalfe, Jenee West and the OASIS staff, Kayleen and Tom Murphy, Marg Devries and Ged and Priscilla Horsley for their help in running the timing system and their invaluable help in preparation for the carnival.

The atmosphere of the carnival was amazing and our swimmers didn’t disappoint. 2018 saw 5 athletes combine to break records in 19 individual events, whilst the Sherrin Girls broke the Senior Relay record. This is especially impressive given the quality of swimmers we have been witnessed at our carnivals over the years.

Within these records some highlights included:

Annabella Storer breaking 6 records including an eleven-year-old record in the 14 Girls 50m Butterfly and records in the 12-14 IM and Opens 200m Freestyle.

Molly Devries and Jamie Mooney breaking 4 records.

Rhys Mooney breaking 3 records and Patrick Richardson 2.

Sherrin breaking the Senior Girls relay record in the final event of the evening.

With such standout performances we will be looking to put together a very strong team as we look to defend our 2015, 2016 and 2017 CWWHSSA and BISSA Swimming titles at representative carnivals in the coming weeks.

AGE CHAMPIONS:

After a night of close competition, all Houses were eager to see who would be crowned House Champions for 2018. In the closest carnival on record there were only 86.5 points separating 1st and 4th. Despite Webber and Sherrin both providing more Age Champions, it was the team effort from Rosarie who reigned supreme and took home the trophy for the fifth year in a row – by a mere 4 points. Congratulations to Rosarie and to all who participated in the true spirit of the evening.

2nd Sherrin ~ 1044.50
